Paulette Clouse purchased the home that is now the J. Paules Fenn Inn in 1984. A family with five children previously owned the house. Paulette initially purchased the home to convert it into a restaurant. There were, however, some obstacles that were in the way of that happening, so it was suggested she turn it into a bed and breakfast. In 1986 she began renovations on the property. She added a bathroom to each room, added to the gardens, and rented out each room as she finished them. She purchased a small restaurant in downtown Fennville and said, "I am pleased I started the bed and breakfast. I prefer the hospitality industry."
