About

The 1851 Historic Maple Hill Manor, located in Springfield, Kentucky, features seven rooms for guests to reserve year-round. Two of the rooms are located on the first floor of the home, and the other five are situated on the second floor. While each of the rooms varies somewhat in size or amenities, all of the rooms have a private en-suite bathroom, air conditioning, heating, free WiFi, spectrum television, and antique decorations. The Stephens Collins Foster room and the McElroy Honeymoon Hideaway have jetted tubs in the bathroom, in addition to the shower stalls found in every bathroom. Moreover, guests can request in-room massages, chocolate-covered strawberries, flower bouquets, custom cakes, rose petals on the bed, charcuterie boards, or picnic baskets.

Throughout the home are multiple common areas that visitors can utilize during their stay. The lobby, which is 40 feet long and 20 feet wide, has a seating area and a room that contains a fireplace and a piano that patrons can play. Catherine and Justin, the owners, mention that those staying at the bed and breakfast are also welcome to play games in the dining room after breakfast.

Catherine says that each morning, breakfast is "made from scratch" for visitors. Every week, she makes a menu for the coming week, taking into account guests' food allergies. Some items that have been served in the past include maple pecan french toast served with sausage patties and scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese hashbrown waffles, bacon corn griddle cakes topped with bacon jam, and orange knots. Guests are given the choice to pick what time they would like breakfast to be served within the range of 8:00 and 10:00 a.m.

The grounds of the property consist of 15 acres of farmland that were previously used as a plantation. There is a concrete patio with a fireplace and seating for up to 25 people as well as hammocks, several different types of animals, and a swing that hangs from a tree. Horses, miniature donkeys, and barn cats are some of the animals that can be found on the acreage.

Culture

While patrons are staying at the 1851 Historic Maple Hill Manor, Catherine—one of the owners—hopes that guests can feel "relaxed, at home, laid back, and casual." She and her husband Justin, who co-owns the property, strive to provide this atmosphere by being casual themselves. Catherine expresses that they make an effort to be kind to those who stay with them. With the intent to help visitors feel comfortable, Justin and Catherine try to interact with their visitors, especially during breakfast. Those who have previously stayed at the establishment often mention the hospitality of Justin and Catherine as well as the history of the home, the decor, and the breakfast. One guest commented in a review, saying, "The house is beautiful, and the owners are nice and accommodating. In the morning, they fixed us breakfast made with local ingredients and informed us where we could get some for ourselves. The rooms were very clean and cozy."

Guests of the bed and breakfast are also expected to abide by a few policies during their stay. Pets are permitted to stay at the manor; however, there is an additional cleaning fee charged to patrons. Smoking is prohibited inside the home, but the owners allow visitors to smoke on the porch if they would like. Catherine also notes that there is not an established quiet time on the grounds and that visitors are generally respectful of each other. Lastly, hard-soled shoes or high heels are not to be worn indoors, as Catherine explains that the floors may be damaged by these types of footwear.

In addition to overnight stays, the property can operate as a venue for elopements, business gatherings, luncheons, and other group events of up to 25 people. The home can also be reserved as a whole for family gatherings. For those who rent the entire home, Catherine and Justin offer murder mystery dinner parties that involve dressing up, roleplaying, and solving a fake murder during dinner.

The area surrounding the manor has a variety of activities that guests may choose to participate in. Some local attractions include the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln, Maker's Mark, and a tour of the Battle of Perryville—a Civil War battle that took place 12 miles from the grounds of the bed and breakfast. Catherine also recommends local eateries to her guests, such as Copper and Oak, La Cosa Nostra, The Rick House, and Toogies Table.

History

As the name suggests, the 1851 Historic Maple Hill Manor was built in 1851. It began as a plantation that Thomas Mcelroy started for his wife, Sarah. A few years after the plantation started, the Civil War began. At the time, the grounds were used as a temporary hospital, especially during the Battle of Perryville, which took place 12 miles from the manor. In the early 1900s, Phil Simms—the MVP of Super Bowl XXI—and his family lived in the home. After the Simms family lived on the property, the house became a foster home. As ownership of the establishment passed hands, the size of the plantation continued to be reduced, with it originally being around 200 acres. The bed and breakfast now sits on 15 acres of land.

Catherine and Justin purchased the bed and breakfast in March of 2022. The couple wanted to move to Kentucky, and they discovered that the property was for sale online. They were interested in the history of the home, so they proceeded with the purchase. Since taking ownership of the manor, Justin and Catherine have made multiple changes to the home with the intent of preserving the historical nature of the building. Electrical updates were made, and the owners also added new air conditioning systems upstairs, remodeled the kitchen, and rebuilt the balcony on the front of the home. Catherine and Justin continue to make adjustments to the landscaping by adding flowers and bushes.

Catherine says that she and her husband's favorite part about being the owners of the business is getting to meet the variety of guests who stay with them. "You never know who is going to walk through that door," she says. In the future, she hopes to add a flock of chickens to the property with the intent to provide some "farm fresh" eggs for her patrons. Catherine also wants to add fruit trees and berry bushes to use the produce in breakfast dishes.
