A Beautiful Edge of the World Bed and Breakfast is in Captain Cook, Hawaii, on the western side of the largest Hawaii island. The property is surrounded by trees and consists of a five-acre farm where Kona coffee, tropical fruits, and macadamia nuts are cultivated. According to the business's owners, some of the plants on the grounds are over a century old. The house was built with koa wood, an uncommon material today due to its scarcity. A Beautiful Edge of the World Bed and Breakfast is 10 minutes from the coast, but its placement allows the guests to see ocean views and sunsets. Local activities include snorkeling, diving, hiking, visiting the farmers' market on Sundays, and visiting archeological sites and beaches.
A Beautiful Edge of the World Bed and Breakfast is located in Captain Cook, Hawaii, on the island's western side. According to Kurt, one of the owners, the establishment is about 10 minutes away from the coast. The bed and breakfast sits in a forested area with a few other properties placed nearby.
The house has three rooms for guests, which is due to Kurt's opinion of having fewer than three rooms makes the property not interesting and that more than three would make it feel like a hotel. Each has a private bathroom, refrigerator, and what Kurt describes as a "Hawaiian flavor" due to the now uncommon koa wood being a prevalent part of the architecture. The rooms' bedspreads, and decor also range in color, with one unit having more blues and greens, and another having more reds, yellows, and oranges. The Crow's Nest and The Pacific Room feature king-size beds and private access to a lanai, or outdoor balcony, for visitors to see the ocean from the house. Although The Nut Room does not have direct lanai access, its occupants have a table on the lanai of the other rooms where they can also see the views. Additionally, The Nut Room has two twin beds instead of a king. Kurt says The Crow's Nest is the most popular room at the bed and breakfast because "of its ocean views and absolute privacy."
A few complimentary services are offered at A Beautiful Edge of the World Bed and Breakfast, such as free laundry service for visitors staying three nights or longer, beach equipment free for people to use, and local tips from Kurt and his wife, Kanae. Patrons can linger in the living room or the lanai to see the ocean when not in their rooms. A garden at the front of the house is also open for visits. Kurt says that the bed and breakfast rests on a five-acre farm run by him and Kanae. They grow tropical fruits, macadamia nuts, and coffee, and Kurt says it is possible to offer guests a farm tour. Kurt further notes that his daughter occasionally presents hula demonstrations at the house.
Kanae prepares a complimentary breakfast each morning for visitors. Kurt says she rotates the main dish each morning, although people can typically expect omelets, scrambled eggs, macadamia nut pancakes, mango, bananas, starfruit, or pineapple. Breakfast is served on the outside balcony, and guests are offered a choice of time for when to eat, although Kurt says that normally it is between 7:30 to 8:30 AM. Kanae tries to take into account dietary restrictions and food allergies that patrons may have, and the local supermarket is five minutes away if any other accommodations are needed at the last minute.
Visitors to A Beautiful Edge of the World Bed and Breakfast can access several activities during their stay. The bed and breakfast is 10 minutes from the coast, where various aquatic activities are offered at several nearby beaches and bays. Among those is Two Step, an underwater location for snorkeling and diving. Kurt also mentions an archeological site, the Sunday farmers' market, and several hikes along the ocean. Furthermore, guests can see Puuhonau O Honaunau National Historic Park, a former place of refuge during the 16th century. Regarding places to eat, Kurt recommends visiting Super J, Ke'i Cafe, and any nearby Thai, Japanese, or Chinese restaurants.
Kurt, co-owner of A Beautiful Edge of the World Bed and Breakfast, says occasional activities are hosted at the house. He mentions that a group of scientists once stayed for about a month while experimenting at a nearby laboratory. He says Iron Man Triathlon athletes are also very common to the bed and breakfast when such events occur. According to Kurt, a Beautiful Edge of the World Bed and Breakfast is best known for its closeness to nature. He continues, saying that its a relatively private location and unique views set it apart from other nearby properties.
Kurt wants guests to be comfortable and feel informed while staying at his house. He and Kanae, his wife and co-owner, strive to promote these feelings by interacting with visitors during check-in and throughout their stay. Kurt and Kanae show people to their rooms and let them see the rest of the house throughout their stay. Kurt also offers occupants his phone number in case they have any problems or questions. He is open to giving them recommendations about local activities or locations of interest as well. Furthermore, he says he and Kanae try to treat their guests with respect so they can enjoy their stay and return in the future.
While hospitality reviews tend to revolve around Kurt and Kanae's hospitality, Kurt says positive reviews are due to a "combination of reasons rather than a single reason." For instance, one visitor said, "Kurt, Kanae, and Jenna are wonderful hosts. [They were] very accommodating & kind. Each day we were given a very healthy and delicious breakfast on the lanai overlooking the ocean below. The room was very comfortable & spacious. We were fortunate to be here during the Christmas holiday, and Jenna treated all of the guests to her very skilled & lovely hula dancing. What a wonderful treat." Another person commented, "We stayed with Kurt and Kana back in February. They were gracious hosts, both in sharing their home and their knowledge about the island. We loved the farm and the fact that it was located out of town. Everything about our stay was amazing."
Kurt says there are very few policies at A Beautiful Edge of the World Bed and Breakfast. Children under seven years old are not permitted, and indoor smoking is prohibited. Kurt also mentions that a three-night stay is preferable since this allows him and Kanae to get to know their visitors better.
A Beautiful Edge of the World Bed and Breakfast is open year-round. Kurt states that its best operating season is from January to March, as it is still warm in Hawaii. Returning guests are common, and Kurt explains that most of his visitors consist of couples, both young and old. Additionally, small families visit on occasion.
A Beautiful Edge of the World Bed and Breakfast was started in 2001 by Kurt Weigelt, a pilot in early life and professor in middle life, and Kanae Naruoka. They purchased the property two years before starting the company, evaluating the possibility of operating a hospitality business. Their objective was to have a place where they could practice the aloha spirit and share Hawaii with others. While they are not the original house owners, Kurt and Kanae are the first to utilize it as a bed and breakfast. Today, their favorite part of their job is meeting people from all around the world.
A Beautiful Edge of the World Bed and Breakfast is named after the phrase explorer James Cook wrote when describing the region upon discovery in the 1700s. Captain Cook—the city where the bed and breakfast is located—is also named after the navigator.
Historically, the property farm was a "ground zero" for Kona coffee, according to Kurt. As such, he states that many of the plants on the farm are presumably over 100 years old, and he and Kanae still cultivate them. He also explains that the koa wood used to build the house is scarce today, so constructing a building from koa would be almost impossible. Since taking over the establishment, he and Kanae cut down a few trees that obstructed the view of the ocean and replaced them with lower-growing trees. As of now, they have no additional plans for their bed and breakfast.
