Bakers Narrows Lodge

Bakers Narrows Lodge is located in Manitoba, Canada, residing on the expanse of twenty-six acres. For over 20 years, Brett Baynton has owned the acreage, working alongside his "right-hand man", Kenny. The property has 23 units in total and each lodge is separate from the others. Athapapuskow Lake is in close proximity to the establishment, providing visitors with water recreation opportunities. Bakers Narrows Lodge serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner for its patrons. Many hikes that feature views of the Limestone Cliffs can be found near the lodges and it may interest visitors who are hoping to tour the area or spend time outdoors. On-site activities such as sand volleyball, fishing, and horseshoes are offered to guests who would prefer to stay near the property while participating in outdoor recreation.

About

Bakers Narrows Lodge is situated on twenty-six acres of land. The property features 23 available lodges during the summer and 9-15 units in the winter for the reason that there are eight micro cottages that are not winterized. Each accommodation is an individual building separate from the others. The micro cottages are two units to a single building. Each of the log cottages is identical with the only difference being the bed configuration. Some of the family cottages that the establishment offers include a couple of sets of bunkbeds.

In addition to the lodges, a clubhouse is available to those who are staying at the property. The clubhouse is typically where meals are served and also functions as a recreational building with activities such as ping-pong, a pool, and a flat-screen TV. Located in the main office building there is an on-site store that sells fishing tackle and light confectionery. The owner remarks that the log cottages are relatively more popular than the micro cottages because they include private showers without having to go to a separate building to shower.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all provided on the property. Hot breakfast options include bacon, eggs, French toast, hashbrowns, and toast. For lunch, occupants can choose between a packed lunch or a "shore lunch" that they can eat out on the lake. Dinner options include steak, chicken, ribs, and other meat dishes. The owner typically tries to give guests a few options to choose from for dinner each night. They also accommodate individuals who have dietary restrictions.

The outside surroundings of the premises contain Athapapuskow Lake, trees and greenery, four total docks, a boat launch, a walking trail, and several parking spots. The owner mentions that one of the most unique aspects of the property is the fact that it is a "drive-through lodge" with pavement and parking spots available to visitors. Occupants can participate in on-site activities without having to leave the property. A basketball court and sand volleyball court are accessible on the ground of Bakers Narrows Lodge, as well as horseshoes, beach areas, and fishing. Fishing is one of the most prominent outdoor recreations within the area as Bakers Narrows Lodge is in close proximity to Athapapuskow Lake, which expands to about twenty miles by twenty miles and has over 575 islands. The lake is about 275 feet deep.

The property offers kayak, paddleboard, and fishing equipment rentals to their patrons. Additionally, the use of paddle boats and canoes is complimentary to guests with no extra fee.

Culture

Many visitors who go fishing at Bakers Narrows Lodge choose to go with one of the property's guides. The business's fishing guides are John, Mac, Greg, Brodie, and Jeff. They each assist Brett with the property. Additionally, there are ATV tours that guests can go on. The tour concludes at the lake, giving individuals the opportunity to fish right after the tour. One could also choose to go in a floatplane and fly into one of the property's remote flyout lakes to fish for the day. The owner is typically the one who flies the plane.

Some of the nearby activities that visitors can participate in include wilderness photography, guided hikes to view the Limestone Cliffs, kayaking tours, renting a boat for the lake, and a drive-in theater. The owner promotes the theater as an activity to do at the lodge.

Pets are allowed on the property with an additional fee of $10. The pet must be kept on a leash and cleaned up after. Furthermore, smoking is prohibited inside the cabins but is acceptable outdoors. The property implements a quiet hour at 11:00 p.m., in an attempt to help guests be courteous to neighboring visitors.

Bakers Narrows Lodge's motto is "relax, unwind, enjoy". The owner strives to create a comfortable environment for occupants during their stay. One previous patron who stayed at Bakers Narrows Lodge remarked, "The cabins are comfortable with all necessary amenities, the boats were ready to go every morning and honestly the highlight was spending the day with John on a guided fishing tour."

History

Brett Baynton has been the owner of Bakers Narrows Lodge for over 20 years. The property itself was established in 1963. The property underwent several changes since Brett first acquired the land. He added the clubhouse, main office facility, and all of the micro cottages (8 in total). He and his family also built their own homes on the property where they permanently reside currently. Since owning the property, Brett has worked alongside his "right-hand man", Kenny. Kenny's wife, Andrea, assists in the office and kitchen at Bakers Narrows Lodge. The housekeepers, Sandra and Shirley, have also played a role in the success of the business.

One of many of Brett's favorite aspects of owning the property is looking after and maintaining the on-site docks, boats, and lake components because before owning Bakers Narrows Lodge, his passion was flying floatplanes.

Additionally, before owning the establishment, Brett and his family decided that they wanted to own a lodge and they began searching Canada for a suitable property. The family had preferences for the type of lodge they wanted to own. They wanted it to be a car-accessible lodge, near a lake, and close to a city. Eventually, when they discovered Bakers Narrows Lodge they felt that it met their requirements and they purchased the business. Brett's parents, though retired, were a part of the lodge's team during the past twenty years of development.

In 2019, Bakers Narrows Lodge started their ice fishing and snowmobiling market, which led to the property opening year-round. This also led to the owner making four winter getaway packages available to patrons with the main focus of the packages being the northern lights, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and wilderness photography.
