Calderhouse Inn Bed and Breakfast

Calderhouse Inn Bed and Breakfast is found near the center of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The property is on the edge of the Saskatchewan River and is within walking distance to downtown and several other area attractions. The Victorian-style house was built in 1905 and has passed through many hands, serving as a schoolhouse, hospital, boarding house, and checkpoint for young men on their way to becoming pilots during World War II. The building is currently owned by Mari Noonan, who has worked on many projects to renovate the building and restore it to its original state. Calderhouse Inn Bed and Breakfast is close to the shopping district of Saskatoon, and several walking trails near the river are a common place for guests to explore.

About

Calderhouse Inn Bed and Breakfast is located next to the Saskatchewan River in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The property is in a neighborhood near the center of the city and overlooks parts of downtown. The banks of the river next to the bed and breakfast are covered with trees, and guests can visit several walking trails. The colonial Victorian-styled property is also between many trees that may provide shade for people staying outside. It is made of red brick with a white double porch at the front and white door and window frames. The interior of the building is an antique style, and Mari, the property owner, describes it to have a "colonial Victorian" design. Many of the furnishings and decorations are made of dark wood, and much of the floor is hardwood as well.

Calderhouse Inn Bed and Breakfast has four units, but only two of them are currently available due to the others being renovated. These two units, the Gordon Snelgrove Suite and Joan Chase Suite are having their floors and bathrooms redone. The other units, The Victorian Master Suite and The Maid's Suite, are rentable. The Victorian Master Suite is an antique room with a wood fireplace, hardwood floors, and bookshelves with glass doors. It also has a private bathroom, a brass queen-size bed, living room, kitchen, and a view of the riverbank from its bay window. The Maid's Suite comes with a private deck, queen-sized bed, private bathroom, living room, and a dining area. This room can fit two people.

Regarding breakfast, Mari says she likes to receive input from what her visitors want. She says she enjoys cooking; part of what she likes to do involves carving fruit and "making it look good." She makes what her guests would like and serves it whenever works for them, making it something of a personalized experience. Mari also accommodates food allergies and dietary restrictions as long as visitors warn her in advance.

The bed and breakfast is in the center of Saskatoon. Here, guests may participate in the local winter festival, food festival, and even the Madonna festival. Mari also makes mention of the Broadway shopping district a few blocks northeast of Calderhouse Inn Bed and Breakfast, where guests can find stores such as the Avalon Shopping Centre and The Better Good. Concerning places to eat, Mari recommends her visitors eat at Mandarin Restaurant and Spicy Time Fine Indian Cuisine. Mandarin restaurant serves various Chinese food such as dumplings, steamed chicken and vegetables, soup, Chinese rolls, and seafood. Spicy Time Fine Indian Cuisine offers Indian dishes like curry, samosa, and different kinds of chaat. In addition to these attractions, Mari comments that her guests tend to visit the walking trails along the Saskatchewan River near her property.

Culture

Mari, the Calderhouse Inn Bed and Breakfast owner, wants her guests to feel they can have privacy while staying at her property. She says the place is set up to allow visitors to have their space, as they have private entrances to the rooms. Even so, Mari explains that she does not enter the rooms unless she has to do housekeeping or something similar. Another thing she does as an effort to make her guests feel comfortable is offering them tea, supper, or brunch if they choose.

When guests review her bed and breakfast, Mari observes that they often comment on the antique style of the house. She feels they are drawn to the historical aspect of the house, saying they are attracted to the "old-style home with a big fireplace" and the nearby walking trails along the Saskatchewan River. Additionally, one guest had this to say regarding the atmosphere, "Mari is so friendly and a delight to talk to. Breakfast here is amazing." Another visitor commented, "This is a nice inn to stay at and Mari Noonan, the inn keeper is a warm, intelligent, and helpful host."

Mari's policies require that visitors refrain from bringing any pets to the bed and breakfast. She also does not permit children on the bottom floor rooms but allows them to stay on the top floor. Calderhouse Inn Bed and Breakfast has no established quiet hour, but Mari explains that Saskatoon enforces a city-wide quiet hour curfew at 10:00 PM and 11:00 PM on holidays. Because of this, Mari says she has not found the need for a quiet hour at her property. In addition to these policies, the bed and breakfast is open year-round.

History

In 1905, Calderhouse Inn Bed and Breakfast was built as a home for the Calder family as a personal residence. Truman Frederick, an entrepreneur and the head of the household, passed away in 1913, and the house was sold several times afterward. The Tuckleys owned it next and operated it as a boarding house during the 1920s. They moved out in 1928, and the property was converted into a hospital run by Marion Crawford. In 1948 the property was again sold to a man named Patrick McBride, who used the home to house young men traveling through Saskatoon to become pilots during World War II. After the war, the building was changed to a school building for teachers and university students. The house resumed operation as a lodging property in 1984 and was once again named after the original Calder family. It has remained a bed and breakfast since then.

Mari Noonan, the current Calderhouse Inn Bed and Breakfast owner, acquired the property in 1993 when she discovered that she had a permit to own the property. Since then, she has attempted to restore the building to its original state. So far, she explains that work is being done to restore the stair railing, paint the interior, redo light fixtures, resand and varnish floors, add a flooring medallion, and put in additional decorations.

Mari says she enjoys learning from the people visiting her bed and breakfast, especially those from Europe and Australia. She further explains that she likes to hear their stories and understand the differences between Europe and Australia's cultures from that of Canada's.
