About

The Calumet & Arizona Guest House is located in Bisbee, Arizona. Currently, there are six rooms available for reservation; however, Joy Timbers — the owner — says that the amount of rooms varies between five to ten depending on if any are being rented for long-term use. Each unit is decorated similarly but differs in size, number of beds, and if they have a private bathroom or share with another unit. There are various amenities offered at the Calumet & Arizona Guest House; amenities can vary depending on the room and may include hair dryers, a fireplace, shampoo, toothbrushes, clawfoot tubs, microwaves, and ironing boards. Wi-Fi is available throughout the house.

The interior of the house is Victorian and offers common areas such as a music room, dining room, guest kitchen, and multiple patio areas. Joy mentions that she has a relatively small gift shop where she sells coffee from a local shop, socks, jewelry, and syrup dispensers, to name a few. Calumet & Arizona Guest House offers three patios for guest use. Also on the grounds of the property is a grill, outdoor restroom, a koi pond, a “babbling brook,” and waterfalls in the pond, Joy says. The bed and breakfast is located in a residential neighborhood where the “executive homes” are located, the owner remarks.

The Calumet & Arizona Guest House offers an “exceptional breakfast” and is one thing that past guests have praised the business for in reviews, says Joy. Breakfast items include fresh fruit salad, juice, muffins, pancakes, bacon, eggs, cottage fries, granola, crepes filled with scrambled eggs and topped with Hollandaise sauce, Eggs Benedict, french toast, homemade bread, and jellies. Joy makes all the bread and jellies. Guests can expect breakfast to be served anywhere from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. unless an earlier time is requested in advance. The morning meal is served in the dining room located in the house, where the cutlery and dining ware, such as teacups, saucers, and placemats, are changed to reflect each season.

Occasionally, the Calumet & Arizona Guest House can cater for events and offers visitors the ability to rent out the whole house for different groups, such as various community groups. Joy, one of the owners, will also host different types of dinner parties for the community.

Culture

The owners hope that all the visitors to the Calumet & Arizona Guest House will “ask if they need anything and enjoy themselves.” Another goal the owners have for their patrons is to create an atmosphere where each person feels welcomed and is able to “come and go as they please.” Joy looks forward to people coming to breakfast and interacting with other occupants if they wish. Policies for the bed and breakfast include pets not being permitted on any of the floors besides the bottom. Joy notes that patrons are able to check in anytime after 2:00 pm, at which time she will give the key to their rooms. Joy additionally informs visitors that she is relatively always available via phone.

Calumet & Arizona Guest House is most known for the breakfast served daily and hospitality, says Joy. One guest who previously stayed at the business left a review saying, “Friendly, easy-going environment. Quiet and quaint atmosphere. The breakfast was a delightful surprise of old-world charm and homemade touches.” Another visitor said, “We truly enjoyed our stay at the Calumet & Arizona Guest House in Bisbee, Arizona. The rooms were beautiful, the grounds were very tranquil, and breakfast was the icing on the cake.”

The business is open year-round and has been operating for almost 40 years. The owners remark that the busiest time of operation is in March. This busy time is accredited by Joy to the snowbirds who come to the area. The area is “enjoyable,” says Joy. Attractions nearby include farmers’ markets, Chiricahua Mountains, Coronado National Memorial, and the Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area, to name a few. Copper Pig is a restaurant that Joy recommends to visitors, which is a relatively newer establishment. Other recommendations for places to eat in the area include Cafe Roka and The Bisbee Table.

History

Calumet & Arizona Guest House has been in business for 38 years. Joy and her husband, John Timbers, are the original owners of the bed and breakfast and have been running it ever since establishing the bed and breakfast. Joy and John previously renovated a building to become a bed and breakfast, and after starting that bed and breakfast, they decided to convert their own home into an inn. Joy remarks that they “redid everything” in order for them to start the business. Changes included redoing the stucco on the house, bulldozing the yard and putting in new landscaping, replacing the floors, wallpapering, and adding heating and cooling. Essentially, they redid all walls, floors, ceilings, windows, lighting fixtures, and furnishings. The owners comment that the house is in a place where they don’t have any future plans to do any more renovations or changes. Joy’s favorite part of owning and operating the bed and breakfast is meeting the different people who come to their property.

Joy says that the building was designed by a “famous architect of the southwest,” namely Henry C. Trost. It was built in 1906 for the secretary-treasurer for a local mining company. When the secretary-treasurer left, it became the Calumet & Arizona Mining Company Guest House. The house became utilized as a private residence after WWI. The Timbers purchased the house in 1977.
