Corners Mansion is located in Vicksburg, Mississippi. A total of 13 rooms are provided at the business, eleven of which are located in the main house, and the additional two can be found inside the cottage. Macy and Joe are the current owners of Corners Mansion, and they strive to take care of their guests' needs, hoping those staying with them will feel "at home" during their trips. They try to interact with their guests frequently, finding opportunities to do so, especially during the check-in and check-out process and during breakfast. Breakfast is served daily for visitors, and a tour of the building is then provided by Macy, who likes to explain some of the history of the building and the area. The owners recommend that guests stay for a couple of nights so that they can visit the many museums in the region to expound further on local history.
Corners Mansion has 13 rooms available for all those that are looking to stay at the property. Each room varies in small details from the others, and most of them can be found in the main house. Additionally, there is a cottage on the property that has two extra rooms. This cottage is only available to be rented out as an entire unit—not as separate rooms. The owner of the property says that, of all of the rooms, the Master Bedroom Suite seems to be the most popular, but Guestroom Quarters 1 and Guestroom Quarters 2 have also been noted as favorites by guests because of the whirlpool tub. The owners strive to keep all of the rooms decorated in a way to represent the Victorian time period.
The main house is three stories in total. On the main floor, there is a parlor available to all those that stay at the property. Additionally, there are porches, verandas, porch swings, rocking chairs, and other similar features that visitors can use if they desire to spend time outdoors around the property.
The property itself is spread out between about an acre and a half. It contains formal box gardens with brick pathways between them to be used as walkways and many of the sitting areas mentioned above. The business is about three-quarters of a mile from downtown Vicksburg, Mississippi, which can be convenient for guests that need to be in town during their stay.
Breakfast is served daily at Corners Mansion, complementary to a patron's stay. Some things that are typically served for breakfast include buttermilk biscuits, fresh fruit, eggs, breakfast meat, and potatoes or grits. The menu changes daily according to what the owners make. It is served at 9 AM in the dining room. If any visitors have a dietary restriction that needs to be taken care of, they can make arrangements beforehand with Macy and Joe, the owners of the property.
Macy and Joe, the owners of Corners Mansion, want their guests to feel like they are "at home" when they stay at the property. Macy and Joe are able to visit with those that stay with them most often when they check in and out, as well as during breakfast. Macy enjoys eating breakfast with her patrons and explaining to them the history of their city and their house, which she feels they are especially known for. Besides those two times, they like to make themselves available to those that need assistance with something or that are looking for things to do in the area.
According to Macy, one of the main draws to the area is Vicksburg National Park, which is a military national park. It has a very large cemetery and explains some of the area's history. The park is typically driven or biked through because of its size. Other places guests can visit include The Old Courthouse Museum, The Old Depot Museum, the Lower Mississippi River Museum, the Vicksburg Civil War Museum, among others. Macy says that people tend to spend two nights at the property in order to see all of the museums in the area. Additionally, if visitors are looking for recommendations on places to eat in the area, the owners of the property say that Rusty's Riverfront Grill, The Biscuit Company of Vicksburg, and Key City Brewery & Eatery are three of their favorites.
The Corners Mansion is open year-round, with the busiest seasons being the spring and the fall. Macy says that during these times, the weather is typically nicer, which tends to draw more people in. Those that visit the property range from being in their 20s to people in their 90s. Families, friends, couples, bicyclists, and motorcyclists have been some of the groups that come to visit the mansion, but the majority of patrons that come are couples.
Something that the owners have noticed that their guests frequently mention to them is their hospitality and that they enjoy the history of the home. Many people have left reviews that mention these and other parts of the business. One visitor said, "Breakfast was served in the main house, and everyone was seated at the same time with the host joining us. There was something for everyone, and it was all beautifully served. After breakfast, our host gave a tour of the house and was very informative about the history of not only the house but the civil war and the Mississippi river, all at no extra charge." Another guest focused a review specifically about the owners, writing, "Joe and Macy are very kind and make sure everything is just as you like it. Our guest room was lovely and comfortable. The breakfast, prepared by Joe, was delicious, and we enjoyed the formal setting of the dining table. We especially enjoyed having Macy sit and share what she knew with all of us."
Macy and Joe, the current owners of Corners Mansion, have operated the business for about 16 years. The building on the property was built in 1873, putting the property near 150 years old. The building was originally built by John Klein for his daughter Susan, who lived in the home until around 1917, when the building was eventually made into apartments for a time. In 1959 a doctor bought the house and fixed it up to his liking, investing a relatively large sum of money into the structure, making it his family's home. When his kids grew up and moved away, they sold the building to Macy's parents.
Macy's parents bought the house now known as Corners Mansion in 1985 and made it a bed and breakfast. They added 11 guestrooms to the house and ran it for 21 years. In the year of 2006, Macy and Joe bought the business and have been running it ever since. Macy entered the lodging industry mainly because of her mother. She wanted to help her run the business and learned what she needed to in order to take over the business when needed. When that time came, Macy and Joe took over, having been familiar with running a bed and breakfast.
Since the current owners have been running the property, they have added the gardens, a new fire alarm system, emergency lighting, security systems, Wi-Fi, cable TVs, and individual room air conditioning. Future plans for the property include front porch repairs and the addition of emergency power sources. Besides those, they plan to continue updating the property where it is needed. Macy says that after running the business for many years, she and Joe enjoy meeting new people from places around the world more than anything else, finding it to be something they look forward to when new guests arrive.
