Dunivaig B&B

Dunivaig B&B

Dunivaig Bed and Breakfast, located in Tarbert, United Kingdom, was built in 1910 originally as a sea captain's home and has been operating as a bed and breakfast since 1990. The three-bedroom bed and breakfast is situated across the street from the Firth of Clyde in the Mull of Kintyre peninsula. A full Scottish breakfast is made in the morning by Peter, one of the owners, and is served between the hours of 8 AM to 9 AM. Various attractions are located near the bed and breakfast, including the fishing town of Tarbert. The small town holds events in the summer months of May, June, and July, such as the Seafood Festival and the Traditional Boat Festival. A number of other attractions can be found close to the bed and breakfast, such as historic castles, galleries, cafes, and restaurants. The small port in Tarbert also has ferry trips to the United Kingdom's Arran, Islay, or Gigha islands.

About

Located along the shore of Loch Fyne, United Kingdom, is the Dunivaig Bed and Breakfast. The bed and breakfast is a Scottish baronial-style home and has a total of three rooms available for guests to rent. Each room differs in size, with the largest room being the Kingsize Room. The room contains a double bed, a large single sofa bed, and a bathroom ensuite. One of the owners, Peter, says that the Kingsize Room is the most popular room because of the windows on both walls that provide a "panoramic view of the ocean from the room." Standard amenities in all of the rooms include wifi, a TV, and an iron. The Kingsize Room and the Family Room both have private bathrooms. Aside from the guest rooms, the patrons also have access to a drying room as well as a patio, which provides seating for the guests. The dining room is also available, which is where breakfast is served each morning.

From 8 AM to 9 AM each morning, Peter makes breakfast for the guests. He mentions that he asks patrons the night before what they would like to eat and then makes a meal for them the following day. Some of the items offered in the breakfast include eggs, bacon, sausage, baked beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, and other things typical of a Scottish breakfast. Dietary accommodations can be made, such as substituting vegetarian sausage, gluten-free bread, and other similar items. If those staying at the bed and breakfast have plans to leave earlier than when the breakfast is served, a breakfast to go can be provided.

There are various activities that patrons can do while staying at the Dunivaig Bed and Breakfast. The nearby fishing town of Tarbert provides a number of restaurants and shops that people can experience. Peter suggests that his visitors try some of the restaurants in town, including Starfish Restaurant and Grill, The Anchorage Bistro, and the Anchor Hotel. Peter also recommends that his guests visit the numerous castles and lochs that surround the area. Tarbert is a small fishing town with a ferry port that provides trips to the islands of Arran, Islay, or Gigha. The town of Tarbert also hosts events and festivals, such as the Seafood Festival in July and the Traditional Boat Festival in June.

Culture

Peter, one of the owners, remarks that he wants his guests to feel "at home" when they say at the Dunivaig Bed and Breakfast. He and his wife, Louise, strive to provide this experience by welcoming the visitors as they come in and providing them with information they may need for their stay. Suggestions include providing opinions about restaurants, ferry trips, and other close attractions that they might enjoy.

The Dunivaig Bed and Breakfast has a few policies for those who stay at the inn. A notable policy is that smoking is not permitted indoors. Peter and Louise also ask that the guests do not bring pets into the inn in an attempt to keep a peaceful environment. The bed and breakfast is open year-round, with the busiest time being May because of the warmer weather, according to the owner. The months of July and June can also be busy because of the number of festivals that are held in the town of Tarbert during those months. Peter says that a unique part of the Dunivaig Bed and Breakfast is the proximity to Loch Fyne and the village town of Tarbert. One guest wrote about the bed and breakfast's location in a review, saying, "It is about a 12 to 15 minutes walk to Tarbert main street and nicely located with great views up Loch Fyne and some nice hidden coves nearby. A great place to stay if you want to visit Tarbert or go exploring in Kintyre and the nearby islands."

History

The house that now is known as the Dunivaig Bed and Breakfast was originally built for a sea captain in 1910 because of the close proximity to the seaports located in the town of Tarbert. The seaports provided quick access to Loch Fyne, so a house was built to provide lodging for sea captains. Dunivaig B&B was converted into a bed and breakfast in 1990 and has continued as such since that day. The property was bought by the current owners, Peter and Louise Bates, in 2006. Since purchasing the property, Peter and Louise have made a number of updates and changes to the house. Some of these renovations include adding a new roof, wiring, and two new bathrooms. The garden outside of the property has also been redone and renovated since the owners obtained the bed and breakfast.

Before owning the bed and breakfast, Peter was a harbor master and a port manager. Since taking over the bed and breakfast, Peter and Louise have loved interacting with and helping their guests. Peter remarks that his favorite part of the job is "meeting people from around the world." He mentions that he and his wife typically receive older couples as their main demographic, but they also receive several cyclists and tourists from many different locations.
