Hartzell House Bed and Breakfast is located in Addison, Pennsylvania, which is a city found on the southern edge of the state, next to Youghiogheny River Lake. The establishment is open year-round and offers five units to the public. One bedroom on the ground floor is ADA-compliant. Breakfast is free to anyone staying at the business, but guests can also purchase lunch or dinner if they would like. Melissa, one of the owners, explains that the interior is designed to be "casual elegance." She mentions that she would like her patrons to feel "comfortable" while they are at the bed and breakfast. Children under the age of 12 and pets are prohibited from staying on the property. The company also offers online packages such as flowers, charcuterie, and others that can be added to a reservation.
Hartzell House Bed and Breakfast has a total of five suites available for visitors to reserve. These are spread out in several different areas of the house: They can be located in the East Wing, The West Wing, and the ground floor. According to the owner of the business, Melissa, the West Wing is part of the house's original structure when it was built in 1870, and the East Wing has more modern designs and amenities, such as televisions. Each unit is uniquely decorated and has its own style. One room, the Patriot's Suite, is handicap accessible as it is located on the first floor of the building. The Trapper's Room and Teacher's Room are combined to make a two-room suite, so guests can only rent these units together. Regardless of which room is reserved, patrons will have amenities, including sinks, a seating area, a hairdryer, and breakfast included with their stay.
Breakfast is made-to-order each morning. The owners are responsible for making the food and have created dishes such as french toast, Belgian waffles, egg custard, and others. Melissa explains that people can choose to have a sweet or savory breakfast. Breakfast consists of two courses, with one of the courses being fruit. Guests are served breakfast between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. According to Melissa, "if visitors have an early tour, we can serve breakfast a little earlier for them." Patrons can eat their breakfast in any seating area around or outside of the home.
Melissa describes the home's interior as having "casual elegance" and "Victorian gothic style." There are various common rooms throughout the home, such as a living room with a fireplace and two kitchenettes on either side of the house. The kitchenettes are equipped with a microwave, refrigerator, cooking utensils, plates, and silverware. They also have coffee and tea that are accessible throughout the day to patrons who would like. Outside of the house, visitors can spend time in the gardens, which have raised flower beds and a fire pit. Melissa mentions that there are many different sitting areas.
There are various activities and attractions in the vicinity that tourists can participate in during their stay at Hartzell House Bed and Breakfast. Whitewater rafting, biking, and hiking tend to be popular pastimes, as there are a fair amount of opportunities in the area for such pursuits. The Great Allegheny Pass is one notable trail with hiking and biking available. Melissa mentions that there are a number of state parks in the area, including Ohiopyle State Park. Falling Water is a historic house built by an architect named Frank Lloyd Wright. The house is one of several that he designed in the area.
The owners, Melissa and Robert, would like their guests to feel comfortable while they are at Hartzell House Bed and Breakfast. Melissa remarks that she interacts with occupants frequently, though she also mentions that she and her husband try not to be "intrusive." In an effort to help patrons feel relaxed at the bed and breakfast, the owners try to be available for them whenever possible.
For an additional fee, the business offers lunches and dinners to visitors that would like. There are a few policies in place that guests must abide by during their stay. Pets are prohibited at the bed and breakfast. Similarly, children under the age of 12 are not allowed to stay at the inn. However, the owners mention on their website that people who want to bring someone under 12 years old can contact them, and they may have "available options." People can check in to their rooms from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Smoking is prohibited in the building, though there is a designated smoking area near the back of the parking lot.
Many patrons have visited the bed and breakfast, and some of them have left reviews of their experiences at the business. One person wrote, "Robert and Melissa were excellent hosts. We had a delightful three-night stay in the Travelers Room. It was well-appointed and comfortable. The breakfasts were delicious and healthy, and we enjoyed one of their additional dinners." Hartzell House Bed and Breakfast is open year-round, and the busiest season of operation tends to be March through November. The typical demographic of guests that come to the establishment is usually outdoorsy people and retired folk. Melissa mentions that they also receive many people who come to Addison to learn about the history of the land and the people who lived there.
The Hartzell House Bed and Breakfast was built in 1870 by Judson Hartzell, a local who served in the military. He constructed the home and used it as a residential property. The company has been in operation since 2006. After running the business for about 16 years, the former owners sold it to the current owners, Melissa and Robert Angelini. Melissa and Robert were led into the industry because they enjoyed the atmosphere. Melissa explains, "We love working from home, and we love to meet people."
