Hidden Meadows Bed and Breakfast

The Hidden Meadows Bed and Breakfast is located in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The land of the business consists of 35 acres, with an additional 110 acres on the other side of the road. The property has been in the owner's family for generations since the 1900s. Currently, the land is owned by Bart and Connie Brashears, as well as Connie's brother. The building for the inn is two stories with a total of four rooms. One is on the ground level and is handicap accessible; the other three rooms are on the second level. There is a great room downstairs and a common area upstairs. There are a total of three decks attached to the building, with breakfast sometimes being served on the biggest one. There is a garden on the property where the owners grow the fruit they serve with breakfast. Patrons are allowed to roam the property and pick the garden and eat the fresh fruit.

About

In the town of Stillwater, Oklahoma lies the Hidden Meadows Bed and Breakfast. The building, according to one of the owners, Connie, is hidden from the main road by the meadows they own. The bed and breakfast is two stories tall, with the ADA accessible room being on the ground level and the other three rooms upstairs. The names of the units are the Indian Paintbrush, Morning Glory, Waterfall, and the Prairie Clover. During their stay, amenities offered to visitors include hairdryers, TVs, WiFi, and ceiling fans. The great room contains a fireplace and is on the ground level, available to visitors. The common area is upstairs for patrons to use the coffee bar, snacks, sodas, sofa, and love seat. There is also a deck outside that guests tend to use early in the morning to enjoy their coffee. There is a total of three decks on the building; when the weather is nice, patrons can utilize these areas. The large deck is where breakfast is sometimes served in the morning.

Breakfast is served at the Hidden Meadows every day, normally between 8 and 9 AM, but the owners are willing to work with the visitors' schedules as needed. Some of the favorite dishes of patrons that the owners make include Belgian waffles served with fresh fruit from the garden. Other dishes include cinnamon cream cheese French toast casserole, sweet potato pancakes with homemade caramel sauce, a variety of quiches, kolaches that the owners' grandma taught her to make, eggs with gravy, and scones. Before arriving at the property, the owner will text guests individually and ask for any dietary needs or restrictions, which has led her to develop gluten-free recipes that she can serve.

Bart, the other owner, and Connie built the bed and breakfast on 35 acres of land that has been in Connie's family for a couple of generations. The 115 acres of land across the street from the Hidden Meadows is owned by her brother, who runs a cattle operation on the premises. Patrons are allowed to roam the acreage when desired and are able to follow the walking trails that have been developed with woodchips. There is a pond on the grounds that guests are allowed to fish on. Fishing poles and lures are provided by the business; however, patrons must provide their own bait. The owner says that it's common for visitors to capture grasshoppers in their fields to use for fishing. A large garden is also featured on the acreage, which is where some of the food for breakfast is harvested. Fruits include blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupes, and peaches. All the fruit is grown by the owners, and they allow their visitors to go down and pick the garden and eat the fresh fruits.

The premises of Hidden Meadows is covered in 20 acres of meadows, which helped originate the name of the business since the meadows can't be seen from the main road by travelers. The bed and breakfast itself is found behind the trees. A large amount of the land is covered in bermudagrass, which gains a lot of wildflowers in the spring. In July, the grass is harvested and fed to the cows across the road on the other portion of the property. Wildlife that can be found on the property includes deer, wild turkeys, bobcats, coyotes, and sometimes rabbits. Some of these animals can be spotted on the land more often than others, sometimes frequently visiting the grounds. The owner says a total of 45 different bird species have been spotted on the property making it a possible location to bird watch.

Culture

The owners say that their property is known for being peaceful and secluded, especially during the warmer days. The bed and breakfast accepts patrons throughout the year, but some times during the year are busier than others. The summer tends to be the busiest time for business, from about April to September. The area can get hot, but the mornings tend to be cool enough for breakfast to be served on the deck outside. Another draw to the area are the football games for Ohio State University in the fall.

There is no smoking on the property and no pets are allowed. The pet policy was put in place in hopes that any guests with allergies will not have to worry about left behind hairs or dandruff from any pets and to ensure that there is no barking during the night. Another important policy for visitors to be aware of is that children under the age of 12 are not allowed on the property unless a family books the whole bed and breakfast. The owner says that all of the policies implemented on the property are to create a peaceful environment that eliminates the worries of staying the night at an inn.

Most visitors who stay at the Hidden Meadows have been associated with Ohio State University, the local university. Such demographics include students, families, or friends of the students. There are ball games and activities that usually draw in the parents, often from Friday until Sunday.

It's recommended that anyone who stays on the property stay for at least two nights so they can fully enjoy the surroundings and amenities that their business has to offer if they are coming to relax and getaway. Patrons have noted that their favorite part of their stay is the breakfast served each day and being taken care of by the owners. "Hospitality" is the overall motto of the business, according to the owners. One former guest has remarked that "Accommodations were comfortable and each room has its own local theme. The walk through the woods or just relaxing on the multiple decks is refreshing and peaceful."

One of the big draws to the area is the Lost Safari, which is west of the property. The Lost Safari is a small zoo with around 40-50 different animals that visitors can pet and hold. The attraction is about five miles away, sitting on about 10-15 acres of land. There are often activities going on at the campus of OFC, with a new performing arts center that has brought in some big-name talent, according to the owners. Sporting events at the university include football, basketball, wrestling, soccer, track, and tennis, which lots of people come up for.

The owners have recommended that their guests try eating at the 33 Café and Steakhouse, which according to them, is one of the best places to get a steak in the area. This steak house is located closer to Perkins, Oklahoma. Perkins also has a small sandwich shop named Cedarwood Market and the Hideaway Pizza.

History

Hidden Meadows Bed and Breakfast has been in business since opening in 2017. The property itself has been in the owners' family since December of 1900 after being bought by the great-great-grandparents, Albert and Martha Johnson, from one of the original homesteaders. The land has been in the family for 121 years, being worked by multiple generations. Connie, one of the current owners, grew up taking weekend and summer trips with her family to the land. The bed and breakfast wasn't added until 2017, with the building being specifically designed for this business. The owners are the only ones to live on the 35 acres side, with the brother living on the 110 acres running a cattle operation.

The idea for the bed and breakfast was inspired after the owners decided to retire. They both loved the area and loved meeting new people and decided this would be a good opportunity for them. The owners say that they have met patrons that have become like family to them. Many guests have returned to the property after their initial visit.

Ever since opening in 2017, there haven't been any additions, and as of now, there are no future plans for the bed and breakfast. The owners built the property how they wanted it to be and have found joy in meeting all their guests and being able to enjoy the land their family has lived on for generations. They say that this bed and breakfast is their opportunity to help others get away from their busy lives and instead take some time to relax.
