About

Nestled in the center of La Conner, Hotel Planter has 12 rooms located on the building's second floor. Having been a historic hotel dating back to 1907, the Hotel Planter presents a historical take on each of its rooms, filled with replicas of early 1900s decor, including its bedding and bathroom decorations. A courtyard on the property offers guests a private outdoor oasis with a gazebo that is shaded by several maple trees. All of the artwork that is found on the courtyard is for sale on the first floor of the hotel, which serves as the Earthenworks Gallery. The Suite is a room that overlooks the courtyard, provided with a queen-sized bed and its own private jacuzzi tub. As stated by Cynthia Hoskins, part-owner of the Hotel Planter, the Suite is seen as the "most popular room due to its unique features, including an overlook of the courtyard and a jacuzzi tub."

Another room, the first of the Queen Rooms, provides views of First Street, as well as the Swinomish Channel and Rainbow Bridge. The second and third Queen Room come with a similar design as the first, overlooking First Street and various sections of the town of La Conner, including the multiple boutiques in the city. The Deluxe Queen Room comes with a pull-out futon, accommodating a third guest if needed. Other rooms include an additional two Queen Rooms, two Full-Size Rooms, two Courtyard View rooms, and a double Twin Room. Each lodging in the Hotel Planter is named after the size of the bed in the room or the unique features that come with it, such as the Courtyard View Queen Room, which includes a queen-sized bed as well as a view of the courtyard.

One thing of note in the property is the shops on the first floor of the Hotel Planter. During its phased opening, the owners–Donald and Cynthia Hoskins–created three retail shops as well as their own art gallery, the Earthen Works Gallery. One significant attraction nearby for guests is the San Juan Islands. The San Juan Islands are an archipelago located in the United States, with a ferry ride serving as the only transportation mode to and from the islands. The ferry station for the San Juan Islands is located 15 miles from the city of La Conner.

Culture

A romantic getaway is the culture strived for at the Hotel Planter. With rooms specifically designed for couples, the Hotel Planter aims to "promote a quiet, relaxing stay for our guests, giving them a chance to get away from the daily grind." Guest reviews of the property discuss the historical feel of the property, stating that it feels like they are "walking back into time," specifically referring to the history of the building as well as the décor of the rooms. The gift shops are also mentioned as ones of "high quality," providing "special" gifts for the property's guests to purchase. Hotel Planter has a variety of returning customers, several of which have stated that this is their "third time staying here, and not our last." All of the hotel's furniture was handmade, providing an authentic, realistic stay for the guests, which is mentioned in the property reviews.

The owners, Donald and Cynthia Hoskins, provide a "quality service, making sure that we are taken care of and talking to us while we carried in our luggage." Although the Hotel Planter does not provide breakfast, a bakery is located nearby titled the Calico Cupboard. The Calico Cupboard provides various breakfast items, including breakfast burritos, french toast, waffles, and more. La Conner is seen as a historic seaport town, with its origin dating back to 1867, when Alonzo Low settled it. The center of town is seen as a historic district, being surrounded by Second, Morris and Commercial Streets, as well as the Swinomish Channel. The historic district is registered on the National Register of Historic Places.

History

Hotel Planter has a rich history, dating back to its opening as a hotel in 1907. During this time, the hotel operated with 22 rooms for its guests. The hotel was built on solid concrete blocks that were made on location, with the property having belonged to Louisa A. Conner, the town's namesake. The hotel soon became the home to several artists and writers who were seeking inexpensive housing while working in the area. La Conner was known for its farming and agriculture and was seen as the "hub of trade" between valley farmers and Seattle steamers carrying passengers and freight. During this time, Hotel Planter flourished, providing housing for these workers. The demand eventually faded out, and as of the 1980s, the Hotel Planter stood vacant and condemned.

Owners Donald and Cynthia Hoskins purchased the building, beginning a two-phase opening. The first floor was turned into an art gallery/retail shops. The second phase focused on turning the original 22 rooms into the current twelve. New landscaping was purchased and placed in the courtyard, as well as the furniture being handmade and set in the hotel. The new Hotel Planter was re-opened by the Hoskins after two years of renovation in September of 1989, where it has been ran and operated for the last 31 years.
