Little Sandy Lodge is a hospitality establishment that is located in Sandy Hook, Kentucky. The property is about halfway between Sandy Hook and the nearby town to the north called Newfoundland. There are a total of 15 rooms available at nearly all times of the year at Little Sandy Lodge. The property doubles as a venue and often holds local events like the annual Minnie Adkins Day Folk Art Festival. Guests can have events of their own if they would like by speaking to the owner beforehand and organizing it with her. Little Sandy Lodge is family-owned and operated. The owner, Anita, runs the establishment with her two kids and husband.
Little Sandy Lodge has 15 rooms for guests to choose from, depending on if they would like a larger space and one or two beds. Regardless of which room is rented out, each room comes with a microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker, blow dryer, alarm clock, and tea. The owner, Anita, mentions that many people who come end up bringing their work with them, so she prides herself on having reliable internet. One thing that is unique in each of the rooms is that there is a different patterned quilt for each room. Anita washes the quilts after every guest that stays because, as she says, "If I don't want to sleep in it, I won't have my guests sleep in it."
A couple of the rooms offer single queen and king beds, while the others offer two full beds for guests that need enough space for more than two people. The single-bedded rooms are a little simpler in design and provide basic needs. The television in the room has DirecTV so guests can watch some TV while they are staying there. The double rooms offer more space to visitors that have more people. With two full beds, these rooms are able to sleep up to four people, and they come with all of the amenities that the single rooms have as well. Room 103 is ADA accessible in order to be a viable option for those who are restricted to using a wheelchair. The bathroom is much larger, and the sink and mirror are lower to accommodate people that are not able to stand up easily.
Breakfast is included when a guest reserves a room at Little Sandy Lodge. Breakfast typically consists of fruit, oatmeal, cereal, and sometimes side dishes like yogurt and granola bars. The owner explains that they don't have the capability of providing any hot meals. Breakfast is served in a dining hall that is right next to the main lobby.
On the outside of the property, there are porches that have outdoor seating and rocking chairs so that guests can spend time outside as well as inside. Large outdoor yards can be found surrounding the building, with one of the most popular locations for holding events being the backyard. Several events that have been held in the past include The Minnie Adkins Day Folk Art Festival and a fiddlers convention. It is not uncommon for Little Sandy Lodge to have groups come and rent a majority, if not all, of the rooms out for a weekend to celebrate a small event.
A breezeway with picnic tables can be found on the property as well. There is a gas grill that guests are allowed to use if they would like for cookouts and barbeques. A firepit can also be used by guests in the yard. The backyard has a stage that is accessible to patrons of the establishment and can act as a place for kids to entertain themselves. There are many musicians in the town that may spend time at the front porch or on the stage playing music.
While it is a more rural location, there are a few places that the owner likes to recommend guests visit. One location she tells her guests about is called Grayson Lake State Park, which is found north of Little Sandy Lodge. At the lake, visitors can spend time doing a wide variety of activities, including kayaking, canoeing, and other water activities. Fishing is also one of the more popular activities to do in the area.
Anita likes to recommend several restaurants that can be found in neighboring towns as well as at Sandy Hook. The Penny Mart Restaurant is one of the closest restaurants to the property. Giovanni's Pizza is another one she likes to mention by name. Giovanni's Pizza serves Italian dishes, and, as their name infers, specializes in pizza.
The lodge is able to hold events on the property, and there are many people that come from different places to either host them or take part in them. Weddings, bridal showers, and other activities are some of the most common venues to take place at Little Sandy Lodge. Some events aren't held at the lodge, but guests will come to stay while they are spending time doing other things. A number of their visitors that come in the fall are usually hunters ready to take part in the hunting season for wild turkeys and white-tailed deer. They frequently stay at Little Sandy Lodge during the night and leave during the majority of the day to go hunting.
Little Sandy Lodge has several policies in place that they ask guests to be aware of and abide by. One policy they ask their visitors to follow is that they keep noise to a minimum in the later hours of the night. Quiet hours are enforced, starting at 10:00 in the evening and going on until 7:00. Guests are allowed to stay up later, have a drink, and spend time doing quiet activities, but they don't let guests have any late-night parties or loud activities after the designated time. They have a zero-tolerance policy on drug use and fighting. Several rooms in the building are pet-friendly, but they don't allow pets that are over 25 pounds. Pitbulls in particular are not welcome at Little Sandy Lodge due to a previous issue.
Over the years, there have been a number of guests that have stayed at Little Sandy Lodge. There are an abundant amount of reviews from the previous visitors. One thing commonly mentioned among the reviews is the cleanliness of the rooms and the rural location. A reviewer that recently stayed at Little Sandy Lodge writes, "It's a quaint little hotel off the main road. Easy to find, but far enough back that you don't hear the cars. It's behind a grocery store so you can pick up things you might have forgotten. Breakfast is simple but not a bad selection." Some people also reference the events that can be held there, with one person writing in their review, "Peaceful, country setting. Perfect for family reunions, weddings/receptions, or just a quiet place to clear your head. Rocking chairs to enjoy on the deck."
The community of Sandy Hook is relatively small in size, which the owner of Little Sandy Lodge says makes the community much tighter. According to the owner, whenever people from out of town ask the locals of the city for places they can get a room, they will often recommend Little Sandy Lodge. The owner is happy to let locals use her property for local events as well. One event that is held annually at the property is called Minnie Adkins Day Folk Art Festival. Minnie Adkins is a local who is best known for her wood carvings and paintings. The festival celebrates Minnie Adkins and her folk art. Several food vendors will make an appearance so people can have food to eat, and musicians may also perform throughout the celebration.
The owner, Anita, purchased the property about nine years ago, in 2012. Anita was lead into the lodging industry when she saw that it was up for sale. She had been good friends with the previous owner, who had passed away about two years before Anita purchased it.
Many changes have been made over the years since Anita purchased Little Sandy Lodge. One difference that was made under her ownership is that mini-refrigerators have been put in each of the rooms for guests to use if they bring food that needs to be kept cold.
The business is family-owned and operated. Anita runs Little Sandy Lodge with her daughter, son, and husband as a few of her workers. They also hire a few workers to help them run the building when it gets busier during the summer months.
Anita also owns a side business where she works with a cellular group called Appalachian Wireless. While she is able to provide lodging as her main business, she can also sell phones on Appalachian Wireless' service.
