About

The McKenzie Orchards Bed and Breakfast sits on five acres of farmland in Eugene, Oregon. The main house was built to become a bed and breakfast. The farm-style house has five guest rooms, a media room, a large dining room, and a spacious kitchen where cooking classes are occasionally held. Each of the guest rooms has a king-sized bed, an armchair, and a desk. The guest rooms do come equipped with television because, as one of the owners, Tom, explains, "we like to encourage our guests to talk to one another and enjoy spending time together." He noted that initially, they would have T.V.'s in the guest rooms, but they had so many guests comment on how nice it was not to have it that they decided to keep the rooms as they were. If guests want to watch T.V., the option to do so exists in the media room.

Tom prepares a hearty breakfast every morning for his guests. He likes to give people options, so he usually prepares a "deconstructed style" breakfast. This means that he provides a small handful of choices, and guests can take what they want. For example, if he prepared waffles one morning, the guest would be able to choose what they wanted to put on it from a wide variety of toppings.

The property surrounding the McKenzie Orchards Bed and Breakfast has many activities guests can participate in, including fishing, walking around the orchards, swinging on the swing in the walnut groves, or simply relaxing on the patio and enjoying the views. Located on the property are Tesla and other E.V. charging stations for guests who have electric vehicles. Within a short driving distance from the bed and breakfast, guests sometimes enjoy white-water rafting in the summer or a day on the Hoodoo and Bachelor Mountain ski slopes in the winter. In downtown Eugene, guests also can spend time shopping at antique stores, going on an "art walk" tour, or visiting wineries.

Many guests have said that they most appreciate the privacy and breakfast while staying at the bed and breakfast. One guest said, "sitting by the river gave the feeling of being away from the fast life, yet we were close enough to the freeway, restaurants, and anywhere in Eugene." Because of the location of the McKenzie Orchards Bed and Breakfast, it is easier to attain a feeling of privacy, but it is close to anything that someone might need or want in Eugene.

Another guest mentioned how they liked the service, especially the breakfast they received while staying at the bed and breakfast when they said, "Tom cooks a wonderful gourmet breakfast with their own produce. Both he and Karen are great hosts and have everything you could need." While Tom and Karen strive to make the inn a family-friendly place to stay, many of the guests that stay at the bed and breakfast are couples seeking a getaway. Oftentimes both visitors from afar and locals stay at the McKenzie Orchards Bed and Breakfast. Other typical demographics at the bed and breakfast include people traveling to or from Seattle and need a place to stop or people coming for the cooking classes.

History

In 2009, the McKenzie Orchards Bed and Breakfast opened its doors to guests and had been a bed and breakfast since the beginning. At first glance, it looks like an ordinary farmhouse, but guests have found it to be spacious and private. Most guests don't even realize that the owners, Tom and Karen, live in the same house as the guests.

When asked about why they decided to start a bed and breakfast Tom says, "it was my wife's way of tricking me into building her a big house." Since the beginning, the plan was for the house to be big enough to become a bed and breakfast. Tom and Karen have enjoyed being the hosts of the McKenzie Orchards Bed and Breakfast. They like to meet all of the people that pass through their bed and breakfast and get to know them. They hope that the McKenzie Orchards Bed and Breakfast can feel like home to the weary traveler or those who need to get away alike. Eugene's surrounding area is known for its political stances and its focus on green living and being outdoors.
