Misty Meadows Bed and Breakfast

Misty Meadows Bed and Breakfast is a rural property located about a 20-minute drive from Victoria, British Columbia. Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, namely kayaking, hiking, and whale watching. According to Cathy, one of the owners, the bed and breakfast is "family-friendly," with policies in place that intend to "ensure a quiet and respectful atmosphere." Guests have mentioned that breakfast is a highlight of the stay, with a menu of organic produce and a variety of dishes that cater to different dietary restrictions. The property is relatively close to attractions such as Butchart Gardens and the West Coast Trail.

About

Misty Meadows Bed and Breakfast is located in the forested area of Victoria called the Highlands. The property is on a working farm that has sheep, a miniature donkey, dogs, and cats. The bed and breakfast has two units available for guests: the Garden Suite and the Paris Room. The Garden Suite is a reasonably large room that can sleep up to five people and has a queen bed, a double bed in a separate area, a pullout sofa, a balcony, and an ensuite bathroom. The Paris Room, decorated with Parisian-style accents, can accommodate up to two people and has a queen bed, an ensuite bathroom, and a large balcony. Both rooms have a TV and free WiFi. It should also be noted that the bed and breakfast can supply board games and DVDs for visitors.

Patrons can access the living room and outdoor patio area at their leisure. The living room has seating, a piano, and a fireplace. The establishment is surrounded by 6.8 acres of land that includes fenced-off areas for the sheep and two octagonal barns. A pond that occasionally attracts different types of birds and other wildlife can be found in the back acres of the property.

Misty Meadows Bed and Breakfast offers a full breakfast featuring local produce and organic items. They serve a variety of dishes, including muffins, yogurts, Belgian waffles, blueberry ricotta pancakes, French toast, pancake puffs, and ham and cheese baked strata. The breakfast is served whenever guests prefer, and the owners can cater to different dietary needs, such as gluten-free and vegan. The dining room, located next to the living room, has a patio area outside. The owners make the breakfast themselves, and it is a "standout feature" of their bed and breakfast, according to Cathy. Previous visitors have stated that breakfast is one of the reasons they enjoy staying at Misty Meadows.

The property has a restrictive covenant on the lake area, as it serves as a bird sanctuary, and there are several streams where salmon spawn. Guests can enjoy hiking in the nearby Frances King Park, as well as swimming in a lake located just up the road. Moreover, people can visit the local attractions such as Butchart Gardens, whale watching, and Botanical Beach. Misty Meadows Bed and Breakfast's proximity to local restaurants, such as the Four Mile Restaurant and 10 Acres Bistro, provides an opportunity to explore the local culinary scene.

Culture

The bed and breakfast is known for its "peaceful atmosphere," mentions the owner Cathy. The innkeepers, Cathy and her husband Errol, have worked in the lodging industry for over 30 years; and have developed a  "feel for what guests want," Cathy explains. In an effort to create a family-friendly environment, Cathy notes guests are to "be responsible for their children" so as not to disturb other people.

Misty Meadows Bed and Breakfast is open year-round and tends to be fully booked from May through the end of October, with weekends being the busiest times. The demographic of those who stay at the inn is typically people who appreciate the peace and quiet of the countryside, remarks Cathy. She expresses that the property's culture revolves around providing a "peaceful and quiet environment." Patrons can choose to interact with the hosts or have their privacy, and the owners can conform to their guests' needs.

Misty Meadows Bed and Breakfast has a few policies that visitors are expected to adhere to. Check-in is between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m., but they can adapt to people's schedules if the innkeepers are notified in advance. The establishment has a quiet time that starts at 10:00 p.m.  They do not allow pets on the premises and do not permit smoking in any area of the property due to the dry forest that surrounds the area. Guests are not allowed to bring additional visitors to the property. The bed and breakfast enforces a cancellation policy where guests must cancel at least 48 hours in advance to avoid being charged for one night.

Some have described a unique feature of Misty Meadows Bed and Breakfast to be its proximity to the city and tourist attractions, making it what Cathy believes to be a "convenient location for guests who want to explore the area." One former patron mentioned in a review, "The location is great—just a short drive to downtown Victoria and close to many local attractions. The property is beautiful and well-maintained, with gardens and a tranquil pond. The hosts, Cathy and Errol, were welcoming and made us feel right at home. Breakfast was a highlight of our stay—delicious and made with fresh, local ingredients." Another notable feature near the acreage is a multi-use trail built alongside the road that leads to the property, allowing access to guests who want to hike or bike.

The owners' goal for the bed and breakfast is to maintain its rural status and preserve the peaceful country environment. They want others to experience the "beauty of rural Canada" while being close to the city, explains Cathy. Misty Meadows Bed and Breakfast does not offer any events or activities but provides guests with tourist information and guidebooks to help them plan their day.

The demographic of Misty Meadows Bed and Breakfast is mostly Europeans who come to Victoria to enjoy outdoor activities such as kayaking and exploring the West Coast Trail, according to Cathy. With COVID-19 restrictions, the property has seen a shift from US visitors to more Europeans and Canadians.

History

Misty Meadows Bed and Breakfast has been owned by Cassie and Erroll Koshman for over 30 years. The name Misty Meadows Bed and Breakfast comes from the mist that often covers the meadow in the spring and fall. The previous owners of the establishment were a man and his wife who built the house and added a variety of details, such as hand-wrought iron lights and a fireplace made from rocks brought from California. Initially, the Koshmans discovered the lodging industry to supplement their income while homeschooling their children. Cassie and Erroll have come to find that they enjoy meeting interesting and well-traveled guests and providing them with experiences in Victoria. In terms of future plans for the property, the Koshmans do not have any specific plans beyond continuing to maintain and improve it.
