Money Pennies Bed and Breakfast

Money Pennies Bed and Breakfast, located in Campbell River, British Columbia, has two guestrooms available throughout the year. Each of the rooms has an en-suite bathroom, one with a walk-in shower and the other with a bathtub and shower. The owner, Lorrie, describes the interior of the home as "modern," with each of the rooms having a different theme. The exterior of the bed and breakfast features a covered patio area where guests can watch the sunset over the mountains. Breakfast is occasionally served on the patio, but more often in the dining room inside the home. Breakfast varies each day and includes fresh fruit, yogurt, juice, and guests' choice of coffee or tea. According to Lorrie, her blueberry pancakes have proven to be quite popular among visitors.

About

Inside Money Pennies Bed and Breakfast are two guest suites that offer different views and décor. The first room, the Ocean View Room, has views of the Georgia Strait, which runs between Vancouver Island and Quadra Island. In the summer months, visitors can see Cruise ships traveling to and from Alaska. The suite also features a walk-in shower, fridge, coffee maker, queen bed, television, and WiFi access. Lorrie, the owner, reports that the room also gets "lots of natural light." The second room, The Western Room, is reminiscent of the time Lorrie spent in Calgary. The queen bed is set in a sleigh bedframe, there are television, fridge, and western motifs throughout the space.

There are multiple common areas on the property, with the majority of them being found outside on the grounds. The most prominent of these areas is the covered veranda on the back of the house. There is seating available and Lorrie mentions that, due to the covering over top of the veranda, visitors can sit outside and watch the rain without getting wet. There is also free parking at the establishment.

Occasionally served outside but generally, in the dining room, breakfast is available for guests each morning between 7:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. In an effort to provide a variety of meals to those staying at the business, Lorrie accommodates any dietary requirements.

Culture

Besides her "standup humor at breakfast," Lorrie—the owner—says that there are no events hosted at the property. She hopes that those who come are about to feel "that they have come to their second home." She strives to provide an environment where her guests can feel "at home," by treating visitors "like family."

There is a variety of activities that those in the area can participate in. On the Campbell River, whale watching is available in different seasons. Visitors can also hike, participate in helicopter or float plane tours, and Grizzly Bear tours, which happen in the later summer months. Other places of note in the nearby region include the Elk Fall Suspension Bridge, Campbell River Museum, and Strathcona Park. Some local eateries that Lorrie recommends include the Riptide Pub, Anglers Inn, and Quay West Kitchen.

Those who have stayed previously at Money Pennies Bed and Breakfast often note the hospitality of Lorrie, the blueberry pancakes served at breakfast, and the cleanliness of the establishment. One former guest said "The owner was hospitable, the breakfasts were delicious, really enjoyed the backyard veranda where we enjoyed our takeout dinner, wine with peace & quiet. The room was cozy, with a lovely bed & bedding." Another former patron said that "the owner was a nice lady and the room was great and breakfast was delicious."

Money Pennies Bed and Breakfast is open year-round for reservation. The busiest months of operation, according to Lorrie, are the summer months of May through mid-October, due to the outdoor activities possible in the surrounding towns. For those staying at the inn, Lorrie has policies in place for the comfort of her guests. Mostly, Lorrie emphasizes the importance of respect: for both the home and the other patrons. Additionally, children under 16 years are not allowed to stay at the establishment. Indoor smoking is not allowed, and Lorrie provides an outdoor area where that can take place if necessary. The quiet hour begins nightly at 9:30 p.m. and Lorrie asks that after that hour, visitors be respectful of each other, with a focus on the noise. Lastly, Lorrie has two hypoallergenic dogs that live at the home and, as such, no other pets are allowed to accompany their owners overnight.

History

Lorrie began Money Pennies Bed and Breakfast in 2010. She moved to the area from Calgary, where she had a restaurant of the same name. She was looking to purchase a home and go into a "semi-retirement," and when she saw the home, decided to start a bed and breakfast. The name "Money Pennies," originally comes from the James Bond movies, and Lorrie remarks that she wanted something unique for the names of her businesses, hence choosing the name of Bond's secretary in the movies.

The previous owners of the building renovated the building. Originally built in the 1920s, they "took it down to the floorboards," according to Lorrie, and renovated the house to the two-story building it now is. When Lorrie purchased the home, she painted it grey and white. A red door adorns the front of the house. She also added a heat pump which helps regulate the temperature of the house.

Lorrie is from a hospitality background. Prior to moving to Campbell River, she owned and operated a Bar and Restaurant in Calgary. Upon arriving in Campbell River, Lorrie opened another restaurant, catered to the whale and bear watching tours. She acquired the bed and breakfast and bought a coffee trailer which she took to the local farmers' markets on the weekends. With regard to future updates, Lorrie said that she is "always doing something." Each year, she picks a new project to update the house, with the past year's renovation consisting of refinishing the hardwood floors in the downstairs area of the house.
