Mountain Harbour Bed and Breakfast

Mountain Harbour Bed and Breakfast

The Mountain Harbour Bed and Breakfast has been owned and operated by Mary and Terry Hill since 2003. Featuring 18 reservable units, the property additionally allows tent camping at the back section of the acreage. One particularly notable aspect of the property, frequently mentioned in guest reviews, is the provided buffet-style breakfast that the establishment offers to patrons. Additionally, those who are staying at the Mountain Harbour Bed and Breakfast are also given the option to purchase dinner meals at the on-site food truck. Outside the borders of the acreage, the Appalachian Trail, which draws a considerable number of visitors, is within walking distance of the property. Because of this, the general demographic of those who stay at the bed and breakfast are primarily hikers.

About

Situated in the northeastern region of Tennessee, the Mountain Harbour Bed and Breakfast offers a total of 18 units. Among these reservable units are a treehouse, fourteen guestrooms in the hostel building, and three units in the main bed and breakfast building, which is two stories high. The treehouse has stairs leading up to a deck area where the entrance can be found, and it should be noted that this particular unit does not provide water or electricity. The restrooms in the hostel building are shared with the occupants who are staying in the treehouse. All of the lodging buildings reside relatively close to each other on the 18-acre expanse of land that the grounds cover. The main bed and breakfast building contains a common area with a living room, kitchen, and dining room. Guestrooms inside this building include the Jefferson Room, the Isabel Room, and the Amy Lea Room, all of which offer free Wi-Fi, a refrigerator, and a flat-screen TV, among other amenities. The Jefferson Room is the only room of each of these three units that has a private bathroom and two-person jacuzzi tub, while the other two rooms share a bathroom. Beyond these available units, the property also allows tent camping in the back of the acreage near the treehouse unit. Within the borders of the premises, there is a pond, waterfall, and a fire pit with a seating area.

A buffet-style breakfast is provided to patrons during their stay. These morning meals vary day to day, with some of the options being French toast, egg souffle, and strudels, to name a few. Breakfast is served on the bottom floor of the main building at 8:00 AM. The owner, who typically cooks the meals, tries to accommodate those with dietary needs or restrictions, provided that he is informed about such dietary needs in advance. In addition to the breakfast, a permanently parked food truck can be found on the premises as well, primarily serving burgers. The food truck opens around 5:00 PM for dinner. Not only is the food truck available for guests of the property, but it is also open to the public. For on-the-go snacks, the Mountain Harbour Bed and Breakfast has an on-site store that sells sodas, beer, and various types of "hiker food," as one of the owners, David, calls it.

The surroundings which encompass the Mountain Harbour Bed and Breakfast are mainly rural, as the property is situated in the Appalachian Mountains. David mentions that one of the biggest draws for tourism in the area is the Appalachian Trail, located within walking distance to the south of the bed and breakfast. This is also presumably one of the most unique aspects of the property itself, according to David, as the majority of those who stay at the property are hikers who plan on walking along the Appalachian Trail. The bed and breakfast also provides a shuttle service to hikers, taking them up the mountain for an additional fee. Another outdoor attraction that tends to draw a considerable number of tourists is the Roan Mountain State Park, which is also considered by David to be "Tennessee's crown jewel." Additionally, near the property is the Bristol Motor Speedway, recommended by David. Regarding places to eat nearby, David typically directs his guests to Puerto Nuevo, Americano Steak House, and Highland BBQ.

Culture

The Mountain Harbour Bed and Breakfast is open year-round, with the busiest season most commonly occurring during April and May, when a relatively higher number of hikers come to the area. October additionally tends to be popular due to the changing colors of the leaves. One of the owners, David, remarks that the general demographic of those who visit the bed and breakfast are typically hikers who come for the Appalachian Trail, as nearly 85 to 90% of their guests are hikers; however, he comments that overall the property receives people of "all walks of life," young and old.

A few guidelines are enforced at the property that patrons are expected to act in accordance with. Smoking is prohibited inside any of the buildings on the premises, and quiet hours begin at 10:00 PM each night, lasting until 7:00 AM. Regarding pets, every guestroom that the property has to offer is pet friendly.

David says that he wants his guests to feel "like they're part of the family," and as an attempt to provide this experience for visitors, he puts forth the effort to interact and meet those who are staying at the bed and breakfast. A fair amount of visitors who previously stayed at the property have made comments in reviews regarding various aspects of the property that they found contentment with. One particular visitor made remarks about the owners' hospitality towards them, saying, "Upon arrival, they got us set up with rooms, hot showers, and even had extra clothes in case all of ours were wet [from the rain]. [They also] went above and beyond in helping us find a great steakhouse in town for dinner."

History

Since 2003, the Mountain Harbour Bed and Breakfast has been owned by Mary and Terry Hill. They are the original owners of the bed and breakfast business, though not of the acreage itself. Aside from the main house and the barn, which were originally on the property prior to when Mary and Terry took ownership, all other facilities and units have been added to the establishment. The original buildings were constructed in the year 1904, and at the time, they served as residential homes. Regarding future plans that Mary and Terry's son, David, one of the owners, has for the property, they are currently in the process of adding an on-site tiki-style bar that has yet to be completed.

David comments that one element that has aided the success of the property is the varying units, the shuttle service, and the food truck, and he believes these aspects all work together to accommodate guests almost as separate businesses. Furthermore, he mentions that one of his favorite parts of assisting with running the property is meeting people from various places.
