Northland Lodge

Located in Alberta, Canada, Northland Lodge is most known for its homemade muffins and jams. Business operations are run by Stacy Tangren and her staff, who have the goal of helping to improve their guests' experience. The surrounding region of mountains and parks are available for activities from hiking to horseback riding to canoeing. The lodge was converted from a private residence in 1948 when it was bought out from the previous owner Louis Hill. When the property became a business in the hospitality industry, it allowed guests to use the house for family get-togethers, weddings, and personal trips. The house contains a living and dining room with a fireplace that gives patrons the ability to congregate and discuss their latest adventures and discoveries. Each furnished room is equipped with hand-washed and air-dried linens, a private bathroom, and wifi access.

We were able to sit outside and enjoy the view while eating our breakfast!” The drinks provided with breakfast are coffee and juices. Patrons of Northland Lodge are able to stay in the dining area for breakfast as long as they want, during which time food will continue to be served. Culture

Stacy, who owns the Northland Lodge, has a goal of providing those who stay at the establishment with an environment that has a “homey” atmosphere. On the property’s website, it states, “Our intention is to provide our guests the kind of hospitality and restful retreat a railroad baron would have appreciated.” One of the strategies employed by the staff at Northland Lodge is to be available for questions that their guests might have.

One guest, speaking of their experience, said that “The rooms were really clean and well maintained. The location of Northland Lodge is the heart of Waterton. It has been a great experience and time well spent here. Every day you would meet new neighbors that shared the lodge and everyone got along with each other having that feeling as if we were all related to each other.”

Stacy explains that “we try to advertise our home for the serious hikers” and, subsequently, quiet time begins at 11:00 p.m. to allow for such people to get more sleep and feel rested for the next day. The house does not allow smoking, however, there is an outside deck on which visitors can smoke. Pets are not allowed inside of the house. Tracy, when speaking about aspects of her job that she enjoys, says “We get to meet a lot of new people and all of the staff that works there loves their job.”

History

The Northland Lodge was built in 1928 but wasn’t known by that name until after later being bought out. In 1948 the estate was bought by Bessie and Earl Hacking with the assistance of Hugh Black and subsequently, the name changed to Northland Lodge. Bessie and Earl later purchased the rest from Hugh and the ownership has been in their family ever since. The current owner of the lodge is Stacy Tangren. On the properties website, it states that she "inherited management of The Northland Lodge after the passing of her mother.”

After the home was built in 1928 it was used as a personal residence for Louis Hill. After his death, the estate was sold in 1948. In that same year, it was renamed and became a bed and breakfast location. The establishment has remained in the hospitality industry since that time. There have been some renovations to keep the house current. In the 1980s the main floor of the house caught on fire and had to be gutted and redone. The upstairs still retains the old material and style of the original house.
