Oak Street Mansion

The Oak Street Mansion was originally built in 1913 as a family home but has since been converted into a place of lodging. The mansion is located in Kansas City, Missouri, near a wide variety of attractions such as the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Country Club Plaza, Kansas City Royals, and the Kansas City Art Institue. The institute is partnered with Oak Street Mansion, providing the building with artwork adorning its walls created by local artists. The building itself is three stories, with rooms on the second and third floors. Two of the nine rooms on the property are located in the Carriage House, which is a separate building from the mansion. Depending on the room, guests have access to jacuzzi tubs, large walk-in showers, or king beds. All the rooms include mini-fridges stocked with water bottles, a Keurig, and TVs with access to Hulu Live. A patio and gazebo outside provide an overlook to the property's gardens. The red-brick mansion is surrounded by a rod-iron fence, with two gargoyles on either side of the brick driveway.

The Oak Street Mansion is located in Kansas City, Missouri. The premise is surrounded by a rod iron fence, with two gargoyles stationed out front, one on each side of the driveway. The driveway is made of brick and leads to the side of the house past the white sunroom connected to the building. Oak Street Mansion sits on less than an acre. On the grounds, there is a gazebo for guests to use at their leisure and a patio with sitting. The gazebo and patio area overlook the gardens on the property. The three-story mansion is built from red brick with white accents on the trimming, sunroom, and balconies. There are many windows, providing a more considerable amount of natural light. Nine rooms are located on the property; seven are found in the mansion, with four rooms on the second floor and three bedrooms. The other two rooms are located in the Carriage House, a separate building on the property.

Amenities offered at the Oak Street Mansion include soaps, shampoos, two spa robes, mini-fridges stocked with water bottles in each of the rooms, a Keurig, tea packets, and TVs that have Hulu Live and apps that guests can log into with their accounts. Rooms on the second floor have king-sized beds with large walk-in showers, and one also has a jacuzzi tub. Most all rooms have reading nooks and desk/workstation. Patrons tend to book the Carriage House, Rockhill, and Southmoreland rooms the most. Features that set these rooms apart from the others are, depending on the room, that they will include an outdoor patio, jacuzzi tub, and more décor.

The first floor of the Oak Street Mansion consists of the common areas that visitors have access to. The living room provides lots of sitting with a piano and fireplace. Other common areas include the dining room, lounge area, and sunroom. A large amount of artwork is found throughout the mansion. All the artwork found on the property comes from the Kansas City Art Institute students. All the artwork is switched out quarterly; those who know of this feature claim it is unique to the mansion. The artwork and style of the building provide a popular setting among visitors for the location of significant events such as weddings. The facility can accommodate 75 people, either inside or outside the mansion. Those staying at the property can use the kitchen for events hosted at the mansion for an additional fee.

Culture

There are rarely any workers on site of the Oak Street Mansion, which the manager has said is to give patrons more space and gives a sense of “Freedom of a quiet, private getaway.” The mansion is run so that they don’t need workers on the property at all times, which provides for a low interaction with those staying at the mansion. There is a pattern in a higher volume of adult guests ranging in age from 34 to about mid-sixties and couples being the main demographic to stay here. Those running the Oak Street Mansion have described the property’s atmosphere as old-school and classy and very mature from the older age groups that are typical to stay at the mansion. Policies that have been implemented to aid this environment are no parties such as bachelorette parties, keeping quiet hours between 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM, which is also partly due to being located in a residential area. There is no smoking allowed inside the building but there are designated areas in which it is. Pets are also not allowed in the mansion for hopes of protecting anyone with allergies. All the rules and policies are posted in the common areas as a gentle reminder to guests.

The business wants those staying at Oak Street Mansion to feel relaxed and have a quiet escape while still being in the city. Guests have said the property is “A beautiful facility with amazing art throughout. Each room has a resort feel and is extremely comfortable.” Patrons have also commented on the proximity of attractions to the mansion. The property is located between the Nelson Atkins and the Kemper Art Museums. The Kansas City Institute is also found near Oak Street Mansion; the institute is also the provider of the well-known art decor in the mansion. Other popular attractions include the Country Club Plaza, Westport and Brookside, Volker Park, The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures, and the Kansas City Repertory Theatre. A short drive gives patrons a more extensive list of activities such as the Kansas City Zoo, Westport, Worlds of Fun, Hallmark Visitors Center, and downtown Kansas City with many places to shop. Those running the business recommend guests to eat at Café Trio, Rye, Mission Taco Joint, Garrozzos, and Westport Café and Bar.

The area is known for being the starting place of famous trails in American history, such as the California and Oregon Trail. The nearby river made the city a hub, especially for the military. The town’s culture is highly influenced by popular sports teams such as the Chiefs football team and the Royals baseball team. On the other hand, Oak Street Mansion itself is known for being a small wedding venue, and especially the art from the local college students. Events such as building your own charcuterie boards and wine tasting are offered at certain times in the year. The business is open year-round and will see a small portion of returning guests to the property.

History

Oak Street Mansion was originally built to be a family home in 1913. Since then, the building has been converted into a place of lodging. The current owners have been operating the business for the past two years. The current owners desired to enter the hospitality business after working in real estate for their careers. They knew the previous owners who had been running the business for ten years, which led to a smooth transition of management. The new owners created the goal to grow and expand the business, and now the building has seen many changes. The carriage house has since been remodeled. The current owners were also the ones to create a partnership with the Kansas City Art Institute.

The owners plan to remodel some the rooms in the future. They currently enjoy taking care of people, making guests their favorite part of the job. The manager of Oak Street Mansion also enjoys taking care of patrons and operating behind the scenes especially cleaning. The business continues to seek ways to improve the Oak Street Mansion; one example is shown through the installation of Wi-Fi locks that make it easier for guests to get into the building.
