Located in southern Wisconsin, Pinehaven of Baraboo is a five-unit property that sits in a countryside setting. There is a main building and a separate cottage, both owned by Lisa and Dave. The property overlooks a pond and small grassy hills on roughly 22 acres of land. The private setting of Pinehaven is a factor in the owners' goals for the property, namely that guests can have a relaxing experience while they are there. There are plans for a gazebo with a fire pit to be constructed in the yard, and fishing is already available on the property's small pond with a "catch and release" policy.
Pinehaven of Baraboo rests in the countryside of southern Wisconsin, a few minutes east of the downtown limits of Baraboo. The property can be classified as an inn or lodge, offering more personalized service than chain hotels or AirBnBs. For many years the property functioned as a bed and breakfast, but in recent years no meals have been served directly on-site, leading to the change in its official classification.
The main building at Pinehaven rests on a slight hill overlooking a small pond and the Baraboo River to the southeast. The property is a two-story home that has been painted a dark green. White accents encompass doorframes, windows, and rain gutters that are spread across the building. There are a handful of exterior porch areas with chairs for seating and umbrellas that can provide a bit of shade. There are 22 acres of land that are a part of Pinehaven of Baraboo, which span across the nearby countryside. Small grassy hills and trees are familiar sights on the premises, with occasional flowers and a paved path that leads to a gazebo. The gazebo is currently under construction but will ultimately feature a fire pit.
Pinehaven has a total of five units, with four of them being in the main house and the last one existing in an additional cottage. The latter is called the Guest Cottage, which contains two bedrooms, a double whirlpool tub, a gas grill, a microwave, and the most outdoor space of any of the rooms on site. The other rooms are called the Antique Room, the Pinehaven Room, the Garden Room, and the Wicker Room. The rooms have some amenities in common, such as alarm clocks, wireless internet connection, private bathrooms, reading chairs, small in-room refrigerators, and access to a common area with complimentary tea, coffee, and hot chocolate. Some of the units have queen-sized beds, and the Pinehaven Room has two smaller beds. Lisa, one of the property's owners, says that the Wicker Room is her favorite because it has the best view of the pond of all the units.
One unique feature on the grounds of the property is two horses that belong to the owners of Pinehaven of Baraboo. Visitors are able to pet the animals and spend time with them as they desire. Other activities on the grounds of the property include nature walks and "catch and release" fishing on the pond. No fishing license is required to fish on the pond at Pinehaven.
The atmosphere that is strived for at Pinehaven of Baraboo is that of relaxation and quietness. The owners of the property, Lisa and Dave, explain that they hope that guests of their property can enjoy the various surroundings of nature nearby. They consider the trees and other greenery of the region to help provide a "peaceful atmosphere."
Pinehaven is located a few minutes to the east of Baraboo, which is a relatively small town to begin with. This allows for a fair amount of seclusion in the countryside of southern Wisconsin. The sounds of traffic are reduced due to the location of the property as well. There is not an extensive list of activities that are possible to experience on the property, with the owners putting most of their emphasis on trying to provide a relaxing environment instead.
Guests to the property have left positive reviews regarding the cleanliness of the property, the personal interactions they had with Lisa and Dave, and the overall feeling of being in the countryside. One guest described the property in the following way: "The rooms were homey and comfortable but also aesthetically pleasing... It isn't a log cabin feel, nor is it exactly 'farmhouse.' They've done a good job of combining the comfortable and cozy with some rustic elements and not going overboard into kitschy-land." Another guest spoke of the hosts by saying, "We had a chance to visit a bit with both Lisa and Dave in the evenings and they are genuine folks that seem to enjoy their sideline as inn-keepers."
It should be noted that pets are not allowed at Pinehaven of Baraboo, nor is smoking. Children who visit the property must be accompanied by an adult and be at least 12 years old. The standard time range to check in to the property is from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
The Pinehaven of Baraboo was initially built in 1965. From the very beginning, the property was created with the purpose of being a bed and breakfast. Before the main house was constructed, the land had simply been part of the acreage of a nearby dairy farm. With time, the pasture that had been on the property was converted into a pond, which is still present on the grounds of Pinehaven today.
Though much of the history surrounding the property is unknown or of little note, it has gone through more intensive changes in recent years. This began with the purchase of the property in 2014 by a man named Dave, who is now one of the co-owners of Pinehaven. There was a period of time where the inn had to be closed for slight modifications, but it reopened in the year 2018 with the official name of "Pinehaven of Baraboo." With the reopening, the property dropped the status of "bed and breakfast," and Dave's fiance Lisa joined the management team.
