Located in the small town of Lincoln, New Hampshire, the Profile Motel and Cottages is just minutes away from the White Mountain National Forest. The motel has nineteen guest accommodations, including single-room cottages, motel-style rooms, and rental houses. The property sits on five acres of land with many trees and a large grassy common area. Guests can swim in the heated pool, play horseshoes, volleyball, or badminton on the property. There is also a large communal firepit. Every guest accommodation has a private parking area for multiple vehicles. The original Hansen Farm House, built in 1850, is one of the guest rental options on the property and has been recently renovated. The Profile Motel and Cottages is open from May 1st to October 15th and is owned by carpenter Jim and his son Matthew.
The Profile Motel and Cottages is located in the small town of Lincoln, New Hampshire. The White Mountain National Forest surrounds Lincoln. The five-acre property of the Profile Motel and cottages is located six minutes from the center of town and has one of its borders on the edge of the national forest. Dense forestry borders the property with several different trees such as red spruce, eastern hemlock, red maple, and the American beech. Most of the leaves on these trees change and fall during the fall season, creating a colorful landscape. The main center of the property is cleared with a large common area, and all of the cottages, houses, and motel rooms form a circle around this central area.
A large concrete drive circles around the property where guests can take their cars and park directly in front of their reserved accommodation. There are eight cottages, nine motel rooms, and two rental homes on the property. The cottages and motel rooms are similar in style with very minimalistic rooms. The homes are decorated and include additional amenities. A small brook sits near the rear of the property behind all of the cottages, and views of the nearby national forest and White Mountain are available from each reservation option. “The mountain view from this hotel was a wonderful thing to wake up to,” said a guest in a recent review.
All of the motels and cottages have a bed with fresh linens, a dresser, nightstands and lamps, a medium-sized refrigerator, and a desk. The rooms also have a microwave and a safe. Private air conditioning and heating units are available in each room, and guests can request extra electric heaters and fans in the main office. An ensuite bathroom is also part of the guest accommodation. The bathrooms are equipped with fresh towels and new basic toiletries daily. In addition, each bathroom has a full shower and bathtub along with a vanity with extra storage space.
Every guest who stays in a cottage or motel room also has cable television with a DVD player and high-speed internet access. Each of these rooms comes with the option of a single queen bed or two full-sized beds. The cottages are separate from one another, with a screened-in porch and a sliding glass door. Black-out curtains cover the windows during the night. The cottages are all set back from the main area in the trees and have private outdoor areas with barbecues, picnic tables, and firepits. The motel rooms are all located on one floor and have two designated parking spaces outside of each room.
The one-bedroom suite is a two-room house with a kitchenette. The bedroom has a queen-sized bed and a twin-sized bed. The living room has a pull-out sofa. This suite can sleep up to five individuals. A full bathroom has access from both rooms, and the kitchenette has basic utensils and dishes provided. The five-bedroom house was built in 1850 and was recently renovated. This home sleeps ten comfortably with a wrap-around porch and is just feet away from the swimming pool. The home has a large, fully equipped kitchen, a living room, a family room, two full bathrooms, and a loft area.
Every guest who stays at the Profile Motel and Cottages has complete access to the five-acre grounds. Some activities guests can enjoy on the property include playing at the volleyball or badminton courts, walking the many different trails through the trees and along the brook, swimming in the heated pool, participating in a competitive game of horseshoe, or sitting in any of the shaded seating areas throughout the property. There is also a large communal firepit at the center of the property with seating that guests can utilize. Coffee is roasted fresh every morning at the Profile Motel and Cottages for guests to drink as they pass through.
The Profile Motel and Cottages is the only motel or guest reservation property in Lincoln that is allowed to have a neon sign. There are many nearby attractions in Lincoln for varying ages and capabilities. Some of these attractions include Echo Lake, Loon Mountian, Clark’s Trading Post, Whale’s Tale Water Park, and the Cannon Mountain Arial Tram. Many hiking trails and lookout points are located within a five-minute drive of the Profile Motel and Cottages.
The Profile Motel and Cottages has been in the hospitality industry for over seventy years; because of this, there have been many different owners throughout its history. However, over the past twelve years, the owners Jim and Matthew, have run the Profile Motel and Cottages with specific policies and goals for their patrons to create a comfortable and enjoyable experience for every guest. The owners have increased their number of guests and return visitors from when they first opened in 2009. Part of their strategy in doing this was to “put our guests first, and give them a quality place to stay at a low price point,” says Matthew.
Located near the White Mountian National Park and just a few minutes' drive from the center of town, the property is both secluded and close to local attractions. This is a commonly commented-on quality of the property. “ Everything is nice and close and the best blueberry pancakes right across the street,” said a recent guest. Another theme of the motel that also receives positive feedback is the hospitality of the staff. One guest said, “We stayed in one of the cottages and then were in one of the hotel rooms. Both the cottage and hotel room were very clean and comfortable. The little screened-in porch at the cabin was the perfect place to wind down with a nightcap before bed. From check-in to check out, we had no issues. The young man at check-in was very courteous and gave us a rundown of the grounds. We had a great night sitting around the campfire with some other guests. The rest of the staff as well as the owner were very professional and made us feel very comfortable and welcomed.”
In order to give guests a more positive experience, the owners try to take care of any guest’s questions or concerns immediately as well as equip the units with the basic amenities necessary for their everyday needs. Some examples of these amenities include a mini-refrigerator and microwave in every room, along with fresh linens and towels. Additionally, all of the porches on the cabins are screened in so that bugs and other animals or even the elements are kept off the porch. A standard maintenance check is conducted after every guest's stay to ensure that all doorknobs, light switches, AC units, and water systems are working properly.
The activities and open spaces on the property make it possible to entertain large groups and children with games and activities. Some of these attractions may include playing volleyball, badminton, or horseshoe. Guests can also swim in the heated pool or gather around the communal firepit. Every cottage and motel room has private parking areas, and the cottages are widespread and nestled into the trees for privacy. Because of this, there is no designated quiet time at the Profile Motel and Cottages.
A few policies have been implemented at the Profile Motel and Cottages to keep the property clean and easier to maintain. No smoking is allowed in any of the rooms and only in select parts of the property. Pets are not allowed either. The owners enjoy animals but want to avoid the possibility of collecting allergens in the rooms. Either Matthew or Jim try to be available at the front desk for any questions or concerns and will interact with guests as much as is needed. The father-son duo also spends a lot of time in their garage workshop, where they build carpentry elements for the guest accommodations such as furniture, vanities, trim, and baseboards.
The motel and cottages get a variety of guests throughout the year. Most of those who stay in the motel rooms or single room cottages are couples or single visitors from the ages of 45-65. In the two and five-bedroom rental houses, there are typically families and larger groups. Many guests at the Profile Motel and Cottages are repeat guests, “We have been coming to Profile Motel and cottages for 26 years,” said a recent review. Most of those who visit the property come to get away from the city and explore the nearby mountains and local attractions.
Some recommended nearby dining options include the Black Mountain Burger, The Common Man, and the Gypsy Café. Typical attractions guests visit in the area are the White Mountain National Forest, where guests can hike and explore nature, the Flume Gorge, another outdoor attraction with a large warm river, and the Old Mill. The Old Mill offers tours through the closed logging mills in Lincoln and takes guests up to the Old Mill Hotel restaurant.
The Profile Motel and Cottages are owned and managed by Jim and his son Matthew. The duo has owned the property since 2009. There were several owners before the current owners, as the property has been in business since the 1950s. Jim and Matthew first purchased the property as another stream of income. Both father and son work in the carpentry industry in addition to being the managers of the Profile Motel and Cottages. Since purchasing the property, the owners have made several drastic improvements. They landscaped the entire property and added the volleyball and badminton courts as well as added fencing around the pool. The entire first floor of the five-bedroom rental home was completely renovated, and the motel and cottages were also updated.
New flooring, fresh paint, and refurbished exteriors are just a few of the updates made in the past years. Jim and Matthew made an extensive amount of the furniture in the rooms as well as the added trim, baseboards, and vanities. The father and son enjoy interacting with their guests and showing their carpentry skills throughout the guest accommodations. In the future, Jim and Matthew plan to add more cottages, continue updating the current cottages, and hopefully purchase more property.
The property itself was home to the Hansen family, and the five-bedroom rental house was the original Hansen Farm House. The establishment was built in 1850. The family farm fed most of the logging village in Lincoln, and the Hansen Family Cemetary is right next to the Profile Motel and Cottage property. The town of Lincoln was founded in 1764 and was known for being a large logging community where the paper was made.
The Profile Motel and Cottages is open to visitors from May 1st to October 15th normally. However, if the weather permits, the motel may be open longer. The most popular time of year for visitors at the motel is during the late summer and early fall. These months are usually warmer, with ample wildlife in nearby forests, and the trees are very colorful in the fall. If Jim is working on projects at the property year-round, he will often leave just a select few of the cottages open for reservation as well.
