RiverWood Inn

RiverWood Inn

Riverwood Inn is located in Jackson, New Hampshire, and can be found right next to the Ellis River. Along with the 12 total rooms that guests can choose from, the inn offers a number of packages that can be added to reservations to help make the trip more memorable. Each room offers different things like private jacuzzies or private balconies, so the owners recommend reading about the other rooms before making reservations. Riverwood Inn is open year-round, with its busiest season being in the fall, specifically the months of September, October, and November. The inn is close to the Wentworth Golf Club, as well as a theme park called Story Land, to name a few local attractions, though the property is set in a more rural area and is much closer to nature.

About

Riverwood Inn is made up of two buildings, with the main building containing half of the rooms and a majority of the services. The inn has a total of twelve rooms to choose from. All of the rooms are uniquely decorated, and each room has amenities and features that some of the other rooms may not have. Several features that can be found in the rooms are air conditioning, which is individually controlled by the guests in their own rooms, as well as WiFi, a hairdryer, a shower, and a closet. Dependent on the room that is rented out, guests may also have things like a balcony, a private jacuzzi, a coffee maker, or a private entrance, but these are things the owners recommend looking for when looking at the rooms on their website. All throughout the day, iced coffee and tea are served to their patrons, if they would like.

In the morning, Riverwood Inn serves breakfast, typically starting around 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Breakfast is usually a two-course meal, ranging from dishes like soufflés, wild cat Waffles, buttermilk pancakes, quiches, frittatas, and crepes. They try to do something different each day, so guests are able to get a variety of meals during their stay. Each breakfast is served with a wide variety of fruit, as well as coffee and juices. Riverwood Inn's staff understand that not all guests have time to sit down and eat their food, so they offer coffee to guests around 7:00 AM and iced coffee throughout the rest of the day. For those going on a fly fishing trip with their business partner, Nate, they will prepare breakfast in a bag so that patrons can have it to go and not be late for fly fishing in the river.

As mentioned before, Riverwood Inn has several business friends that can help guests get discounts for various activities. As a special package, guests can set aside time with Nate to go down to one of the nearby rivers; the Ellis or the Wildcat tend to be popular fishing spots, and he can take them on a guided fly fishing trip, whether it be for a first-timer or someone who wants to learn the tips and tricks of the area. Riverwood Inn also has a settlement with the Wentworth Golf Club where guests can purchase a package that gives them two nights at Riverwood Inn and a round of golf with a golf cart each day. There are several other packages that guests purchase as well. One of them is a Romantic Getaway, which gives patrons a floral arrangement, chocolates, and champagne with their stay. Another one is the Jingle Bell Chocolate Tour, which is a seasonal activity during the Christmas season that provides a sleigh ride through town that stops at local businesses, who will give them a chocolate treat at each arrival. The last package they offer is called Shop 'till You Drop, which includes a limousine ride through the town that will stop at any and every store the guests want. Once guests return from the store, they can leave their purchases in the limousine. The chauffeur takes care of the driving, which allows guests to ride without having to worry about traffic or parking.

The city of Jackson has a number of places that guests may have an interest in visiting. While Riverwood Inn is located in a more rural area that is closer to hiking trails, mountains, and nature in general, there are also several cities nearby that have restaurants, shops, and entertainment that guests in the past have visited. One attraction that is within the area is an amusement park called Story Land, which sports an aquarium and a number of rides. There are several restaurants in the area as well, such as the Wildcat Tavern, which was personally recommended by the owner, among others.

Culture

The goal that the owners of Riverwood Inn have for their property is to create an atmosphere that is peaceful and quiet for their guests. They seek to make a place where adults can get away from their busy lives and find relaxation. To aid them in maintaining this environment, they have several policies put in place. Riverwood Inn has a policy against bringing dogs to the property. The establishment also says not to bring children under the age of 14 to help ensure that there is quiet and less roughhousing for the staff and other visitors.

The establishment has received a number of reviews over the years that it has been open. Among the reviews, one person wrote, "Our stay was very pleasant. The location is excellent; it's close proximity to a lot of things to do if you enjoy hiking, sightseeing, or shopping. The owners are very nice. Overall, it was a wonderful stay."

The owners of Riverwood Inn who are Susan and her husband, James, say they enjoy running the inn because they get to meet people that come from all over the world. James explains that many of the people who make reservations at the inn are from a wide range of places, from California to Germany to parts of Asia. He also explains that many of them come to experience the mountains of the area, as some visitors have never even been to or seen a mountain before. They do their best to help their guests when they need it, but they also understand personal space and will not intrude on their patrons if they wish to be left alone. One guest to RiverWood Inn left review specifically mentioning the hosts by saying, "Very friendly hosts. Especially helpful with pointing out local suggestions for activities."

Both the property and the town tend to be more laid back and peaceful. The city does have its own events that go on seasonally. They have an event called the Covered Bridge Dance, which is when local musicians will play at the covered bridges by the rivers. They also hold a seasonal Duck Race, which takes place in the spring.

Due to the location of the town of Jackson, there is a much easier connection to nature with the city. Travelers that want to spend time in the outdoors, be it hiking and biking—or if they visit during the winter, skiing and snowboarding—can access such places not far from Jackson. Several of the mountains in the vicinity would include Mt. Eisenhower, Mt. Carrigain, and Wildcat Mountain. There are also a few national and state parks in the area, such as Merriman State Forest, Conway Common Lands State Forest, and Crawford Notch State Park.

History

Riverwood Inn was established as it currently is operated about nine years ago. The current owners, Susan and James, purchased it in 2012 and turned it into what it is today. Over the years, they have updated and renovated the buildings and rooms to be more accommodating for the guests that visit.

Though Riverwood Inn has been around for less than a decade, the building itself has been around for over a century. The building was erected in the 1880s, close to the same time as the construction of the locally-famous covered bridges. Initially, it was built as an add-on to what was known as the Hawthorne Inn. Unfortunately, disaster struck, and a fire burned the Hawthorne Inn's main building to the ground sometime in the 1970s. The property was left unused for quite some time, serving only as a place to stay for horses. Years later, Susan and James bought the property and changed its name to Riverwood Inn.

James explains that they spent roughly two years looking at other inns and bed and breakfasts before finally selecting this one. They have enjoyed running the business and being able to meet people from increasingly more distant cities and countries. To help people who are foreign to the area, James and Susan have created maps and itineraries with noteworthy places and interesting activities that can be seen and done in the area. That way, guests can spend less time searching for things to do and more time doing the activities they want.
