Rosemont Inn Bed and Breakfast is a two-story bed and breakfast with seven available rooms for visitors to the property. The business is located in Utica, New York, and the owners strive to preserve its history by keeping to the Victorian style in which it was built. Those that stay at the inn can take advantage of available games and magazines, as well as on-site massages for an additional charge. Breakfast is served daily from 8:00 A.M. to 9:30 A.M. One of the owners, Rita, mentions that her guests comment to her frequently about the morning meals they receive. She strives to take care of the needs of her visitors and hopes that all of them feel comfortable when they stay with her.
The Rosemont Inn Bed and Breakfast is located in the historic downtown of Utica, New York. The building on the property was styled to fit the Victorian age. There are some flower gardens on the grounds and a parking lot for those that are staying at the business. At the bed and breakfast, there are seven available units to be rented out to visitors. Each unit has a private bathroom—most of which have recently been updated. According to the owner, Rita, the Othello room is presumably the most popular room for those visiting and, coincidentally, is also one of her personal favorites. This room has a king-size bed, a two-person shower, and a separate "claw-foot" tub. Another favorite room of hers is called Solitude. This room is toward the back of the house and is furthest away from the street, which can help provide a quiet atmosphere for those that are hoping for such. The Wine and Roses room is another popular room, according to the owner, mainly because it is a family-size room on the first floor. People can also visit the parlor, the sitting room, and the side porch.
Breakfast is served every morning in a "cook to order" fashion that is brought to each person. This meal can be served on the porch, in the dining room, or in a guest's room, based on their preference. Breakfast is typically served from 8:00 A.M. to 9:30 A.M., but an earlier breakfast or a "to go" breakfast can be provided for those that request such. Meals served during breakfast include drinks, such as tea and coffee; pastries, including whole-wheat muffins and scones; and savory dishes, with omelets and frittatas, as a few examples. Vegetarian and other dietary restrictions can be taken care of at the Rosemont Inn Bed and Breakfast. The owners ask their guests to inform them of any meal restrictions before their stay.
The owner of the Rosemont Inn Bed and Breakfast says that many of her guests have enjoyed the breakfast served in the morning, the service that they receive from the housekeeper, and the cleanliness of the building. One review about the property that reflects some of these observations says, "The Rosemont Inn is wonderful. Rita, the innkeeper, was very accommodating. She went the extra mile to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The breakfast each morning in the dining room was such a great way to start the day." Similarly, another guest said, "Very clean building with great service and wonderful personal attention. I appreciate and respect the owners' dedication to historic preservation and community enhancement."
Rita mentions that they strive to live by the mission statement on their website, part of which says: "... we are committed to the growth and revitalization of Utica’s downtown, its Historic Districts, and its multi-cultural diversity. We recognize and embrace the concept that progress comes from one property and one business at a time. Most importantly, we believe that the Rosemont Inn is not only an important property from Utica's past but that it can be a catalyst to its future."
One of the most important policies included at the Rosemont Inn Bed and Breakfast reflects their mission statement; that policy is that guests should be considerate of other people. Other policies include that children under the age of 12 are given their stay for free and that visitors are given a key to the home as the door is constantly locked. The owners also ask that all smoking be done outdoors.
Some of the more common people that stay at the bed and breakfast are college students and their parents. The owner, Rita, mentions that there are about five colleges in the area that contribute to their demographic. She also mentions that many guests that are traveling around the area choose to stop in her part of Utica on their way to other destinations. The property is open year-round, with its busiest season being noted as May through October by the owner. There can be many activities and events that are taking place in the area during this time. Rita says that weddings, races, college graduations, and other events often occur during these months.
For those looking for things to do near or in Utica, Rita states that events at the Stanley Theatre occur often and that there is a sizeable park nearby that people can play or relax in. Dining options in the area that Rita recommends include The Tailor and the Cook, Iconic by Chesterfield, and Ancora!.
The current owners of the Rosemont Inn Bed and Breakfast have been running the business since 2004. Having bought the property and established the business in 1998, the bed and breakfast has seen only one other pair of owners. This couple was Bob and Brenda Michaels. Before they bought the building, it had a few different functions, but the foremost of these was as a place of residence for the Wheeler family. This was its function until 1979 when the Wheelers sold it. The building was used for various businesses afterward and then bought by Bob and Brenda, who needed to conduct many renovations on the property at that time. In 2019, the current owners redecorated all of the rooms, installed new bathrooms, and updated many of the showers. Rita, one of the owners, says, "either you're growing or you're dying," and she feels that they are consistently growing their business for the better.
The current owners were led into the industry after looking at many job options. In the past, they had discussed having a bed and breakfast, and they decided to bring those plans forward in their lives. They were looking for a year-round business, and they felt that the Rosemont Inn Bed and Breakfast in the city of Utica would be a good place for their business. Rita says that they have no regrets about their choice of work and that they have many more things that they would like to do with their business before they retire. The owners say that their favorite part of their job is "meeting a diversity of people that [they] wouldn't meet if [they] weren't doing this." Rita says that they meet people from all around the world from many different backgrounds. The owners hope to keep bringing more people to their business, and they plan to convert another space into a guestroom so that there is another first-floor room available for more people to rent in the future.
