Sakura Ridge - The Farm and Lodge

Sakura Ridge is a bed and breakfast located near the Columbia River on the edge of Hood River, Oregon. The business is typically open from April 1st through November 30th and offers visitors to choose from five suites. Also located on the grounds of the property are orchards of fruit trees and a farm that raises sheep and chickens, as the name implies. Many of the ingredients that are used to make breakfast come from the farm and orchards, namely fruit and eggs. Breakfast is created by a certified chef, who provides a weekly menu of the meals he can make for guests. The owner mentions that she wants her patrons to feel "rested and relaxed" during their stay.

About

Sakura Ridge offers five rooms in their 5,400 square foot house. The units are uniquely named and decorated, though they all provide similar amenities. The accommodations include the Orchard Suite, Mt. Hood Suite, Mt. Adams Suite, River Room, and Valley Room. Regardless of which unit a guest decides to reserve, each room comes with a private bathroom, windows, toiletries, Wi-Fi, and a queen-sized bed. The owner describes the rooms as having a "log cabin feel, and the bathrooms' decorations are Japanese inspired." She explains that one of the more popular units tends to be Orchard Suite because it has a private entrance and balcony. The Orchard Suite is found on the first floor and doesn't require stairs to reach, making it more accessible for those who have wheelchairs.

The building has a variety of common rooms that visitors are able to spend time in during their stay. The dining room is often used during breakfast or whenever visitors need a place to eat. One will also find a living room with a fireplace, which can be lit when the temperature is colder. The game room has books, puzzles, and a variety of games, including board games and cards. Outside, there are a few porches and decks that can be used if patrons would like. The business has various fruit orchards and gardens on the grounds and a farm with animals such as sheep and chickens.

Breakfast is provided free of charge to everyone staying at Sakura Ridge. The business has a menu that visitors can choose from before they arrive. One such item that can be made is a bento box, which is a Japanese-inspired breakfast, but the owner mentions that there are many different options, and not all of them are Japanese dishes. The owner explains that she tries to purchase "sustainably sourced ingredients." Many of the items that are used to make the meal come from the establishment's farm and orchards, including fruit and eggs from the chickens found at the farm. Breakfast is usually served in the dining room each morning, but visitors have the option of eating outside on one of the porches if they would prefer. The chef responsible for making breakfast is certified from a culinary school known as Le Cordon Bleu, which means "he has gone through a higher level of culinary arts." He is capable of making dietary accommodations as long as he is given enough time in advance.

Outside of Sakura Ridge, one can find a variety of attractions. Hood River flows near the property and is a smaller river that flows from the Columbia River, which can also be found within the vicinity. The rivers allow guests to participate in recreational activities such as swimming and tubing. The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area also offers boating and windsurfing. Mt. Hood is located south of the establishment and provides a variety of hiking trails. According to the owner, the city of Portland is about an hour and a half away from Sakura Ridge. She also likes to recommend restaurants to patrons that are visiting the area. A few that she enjoys mentioning by name are Celilo Restaurant & Bar, Pine Street Bakery, and pFriem Family Brewers.

Culture

The owner of Sakura Ridge would like her guests to feel "rest, relaxation, and invigoration" when they stay at the bed and breakfast. In an effort to create this atmosphere, she provides toiletries in the bathroom, linens on the beds, and locally sourced ingredients for breakfast. One activity she would like to start doing soon is helping visitors create itineraries for their trips. She remarks, "If someone wants to come with their significant other, they may fill out a questionnaire regarding what activities they want to do while they are here. Then, I would be able to provide information on some of the things they may be interested in doing that are found nearby."

There are several policies that visitors must abide by while they are at Sakura Ridge. Smoking is prohibited inside the building and on the grounds due to it being a fire hazard. Pets cannot be accommodated at the bed and breakfast. As for quiet hours, visitors are expected to keep noise to a minimum starting at 10:00 p.m. and continuing until 8:00 a.m. The establishment is also capable of holding events on the grounds. In the past, people have held women's retreats, men's retreats, weddings, elopements, and yoga retreats.

A few former guests have left remarks about their experience at Sakura Ridge. One person wrote, "Great lodge for any getaway reason. [The inn has] beautiful views of Mt Hood and Hood River Valley. The lodge is in a pear orchard and has a sheep farm, but quiet and peaceful." The business is open from April 1st through November 30th. The busiest time of year for the bed and breakfast is usually during the summer months, and the typical demographic of patrons tends to be couples.

History

The current owner has been running the business since 2020 and has made many renovations to the building. A majority of the updates affected the interior of the bed and breakfast, as she has redecorated all of the suites. The current owner explains that she entered the lodging industry "by accident." She mentions that while she had always wanted to run a lodge or inn from a young age, she initially bought the land and accompanying building for the orchards. The owner has a cider company in Washington state, and she planned on using the fruit from the orchards for her company. Later, she and her husband decided to use the house as a bed and breakfast.

Before it became a bed and breakfast, the farm and orchards were the primary characteristics of the land that were being utilized, both of which have been around for a significant amount of time. In the future, the owner would like to create a spa for those staying at Sakura Ridge. She would also like to construct more units that guests could reserve, including small cottages and "sleeping pods." The owner describes the sleeping pods as "octagonal tents that are self-sustained and have electricity and water."
