Sawin' Logs Bed and Breakfast

The Sawin’ Logs Inn is located a few miles south of Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming. The two-story building has three suites available on the first floor. Each of the three suites are different in appearance from one another. Breakfast is not served; however, storage space is provided should guests wish to bring their own food. Guests are free to use the common area inside of the house as well as the large deck, grill, and fire pit outside on the property. There are many outdoor activities that patrons can enjoy in the area, such as hiking, fishing, hunting, visiting Devils Tower, and more. Roy and Twila Pilcher, the inn’s owners, hope that when guests come to stay with them that they will feel like they are going to grandma’s house and will feel at home.

About

Near the Devils Tower National Monument in eastern Wyoming is the Sawin’ Logs Inn. The two-story home sits on a hill facing east, overlooking the valley below. The outside of the building is light blue in color with a 3000 square foot deck all along the front of the house. Much of the property is an open field with trees occupying the space behind the inn. Patrons can also observe various animals native to the region from the deck, such as deer, chipmunks, and birds. The house was originally built in 1992 by its current owners, Roy and Twila Pilcher.

The inn itself has three rooms available for reservation, each having a different theme from one another. The Saffron Suite has a pastel theme and is decorated with light blues and yellows with pictures of flowers adorning the walls. It also has the only handicap-friendly bathroom on the premises. The Rustic Retreat offers guests a more subdued color palette than that of the Saffron Suite. The color theme involves darker greens and browns with more mature artwork and décor. The final room is the Classic Cove, which serves as the most romantic room of the three, with pink accents all around the room. Despite all three rooms having distinctly different themes, they all have very similar amenities. Each room has a queen-size bed, a private bathroom, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi.

All of the suites available for guests to reserve are located on the first floor of the house. The second floor has a common area with tables, chairs, and couches, access to the deck, and a small library of books. Breakfast is not served at the Sawin’ Logs Inn; however, storage space is provided both in the pantry and the fridge should guests bring their own food to eat. For guests without food who still want breakfast, Twila recommends they try the Devil’s Tower View Café about five minutes down the road.

Culture

The main attraction that many people who stay at the Sawin’ Logs Inn visit is the Devils Tower Monument, which is located down the road from the inn. The monument park has many different activities for visitors, such as hiking, climbing on the actual 1300 foot tall monument, and observing some of the buildings that served as the park’s headquarters in the mid-1900s.

North of Devils Tower, there are more things to do in the town of Hulett, Wyoming. Here tourists can visit some of the shops in the town as well as stop by the Hulett Museum and Art Gallery, which is free to visit. Hulett is also home to The Golf Club at Devils Tower, a championship golf course. While the course itself is private, the location does have a restaurant, the 77 Steak House, which is open to the public. There are other restaurants in the town as well, including the Red Rock Café for those seeking breakfast further away from the inn. South of the inn, there are more outdoor activities guests can participate in near the town of Pine Haven. Surrounding the town is a large reservoir named Keyhole Reservoir, where visitors can go fishing for walleye, catfish, and smallmouth bass, among others. The Keyhole Marina provides boat access to the lake in Keyhole State Park a few minutes outside of town, as well as large fields and beach access.

Twila, one of the owners of the property, says she wants her guests to feel like they are going to grandma’s house when they stay with her. The inn is frequently reserved by people who want to see the Devils Tower Monument, so the atmosphere at the inn is usually quiet during the duration of the guests’ stay. Twila likes interacting with guests when they are there and suggests activities to do in the area. Roy, the other owner of the property, has chainsaw art pieces that he makes dotted the property for guests to view. The property also has a grill and a firepit that guests can use at their leisure.

Reviews of the inn make a special note of the close proximity to Devils Tower and the quality of their stay. One guest said, “Beautiful place close to Devil's Tower. It was scenic and quiet.” The Sawin’ Logs Inn has a no pets policy for travelers, and smoking is not allowed inside of the inn. The inn operates from the spring to the fall, typically closing for the winter months. Exceptions can occasionally be made for guests if they wish to stay there during the winter by contacting Twila directly to make arrangements.

History

Roy and Twila Pilcher have been married for 41 years and have lived in Wyoming for 31 of those years. When they moved to their current property, Twila expressed her desire to Roy to start a bed and breakfast. They bought the property the inn now sits on in 1992. As they didn’t have any buildings on it, the Pilchers built their house with a bed and breakfast in mind, reserving the first floor for guest rooms and the second floor for their family. Over the next several years, Twila spent much of her time at home raising her children as Roy worked various jobs in the logging industry. Once their kids had grown up, the Pilchers decided to open the Sawin’ Logs Inn in 2009. Because they built the house with the goal of eventually running an inn, Roy and Twila were able to transition from raising their family to hosting guests without having to wait to buy or build a new property. They have enjoyed getting to know the patrons who have stayed with them, and they look forward to continuing to meet new guests for years to come.
