Skaneateles Inn on 20

The Skaneateles Inn on 20 is a short distance outside of the town of Skaneateles in northwestern New York. It has 20 different guest accommodations of varying degrees of stay duration and availability during the year. The inn was once a motel back in the 1960s, and so it still has a motel-style look to it, though with modernized amenities and features. Its feel, however, can be described as being more like a bed & breakfast or an inn. This more homey feeling is due to the fact that they serve breakfast on the premises and because the guest accommodations have all been renovated and modernized. Beyond this, the rooms are also all distinctly decorated to differ from the cookie-cutter feeling associated with motels. Close by is the city of Auburn, New York, known for its history and culture. Notable among these attractions are the William Seward House and the Harriet Tubman Home.

About

Skaneateles is a small village at the northern tip of Skaneateles Lake in New York. The Skaneateles Inn on 20 rests a short distance outside of the city proper, and it is a few minutes east of the Auburn township. The property consists of three acres, and the main building is a one-story, classic-style motel from the 1960s that has been converted into an inn. The motel is a soft blue color, and trees and grass surround the property.

There are a total of fourteen guest accommodations at Skaneateles Inn on 20 that are available year-round. Some of the amenities and features that are provided to guests staying at the property include mini-fridges private bathrooms, microwaves, coffee pots, television sets, and free on-site parking for trailers, boats, or other small outdoor recreational vehicles. Though the inn has the outward appearance of a standard motel, the rooms each vary in their decor and theme, generally adopting some form of nautical ambiance. Room choice, then, can be determined by the decoration preferences of guests in addition to the location of the room on the property.

Beyond these fourteen rooms, there are an additional four rooms at Skaneateles Inn that are available exclusively in the summer months— which is typically when the inn sees its highest occupancy rates. This time period spans from June to September of each year. Finally, the inn has two apartments that are designed for longer-term stays. These apartments have bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and living rooms.

Outside of the property, guests will find an in-ground pool and a fair amount of grassy space (roughly an acre and a half). This area is designated primarily for children and pets to play in, of which both groups are permitted and even encouraged on the property. A continental breakfast is served each morning, and coffee is always available in the rooms at the inn. The Skaneateles Inn on 20 is a smoke-free building. Check-in time is 3:00 PM, and check-out time is 11:00 AM.

Culture

The Skaneateles Inn on 20 is a family-friendly business that strives to emulate the phrase "a home away from home." The previous owner of Skaneateles Inn was Sue Dove, who desired for the property to have a quiet and peaceful atmosphere for the convenience of the guests staying there.

The inn has the appearance of—and once was—a motel. Many of those who stay at the inn are passing through the area and are in need of lodging for the night before moving on the next day. However, the atmosphere of Skaneateles Inn on 20 is more akin to an inn or a bed and breakfast—with a continental approach to breakfast. Each of the rooms at the inn is uniquely furnished, and the different styles of lodging separate it from functioning as a traditional motel.

Though the property is open year-round, it sees an influx of visitors in the summer months: from June to September, specifically. Guests have commented on the cleanliness of the property, the friendly staff members, and good customer service. One guest said, "small vintage motel with nice updates. Comfortable bed and armchairs and little additional pieces that make the stay easier. The owner asks for preferences and fixes a small tray of packaged pastries and fruit plus instant oatmeal for a Continental breakfast in your room. Microwave, refrigerator, coffee pot, and cable TV are in every room."

The city of Auburn, New York, is known for its historical sites and rich culture. There is an assortment of museums and national landmarks that are popular attractions for tourists and guests of the Skaneateles Inn on 20. A couple of notable attractions among those in the nearby area include the Harriet Tubman Home and the William Seward House.

History

Skaneateles Inn on 20 was built sometime in the 1960s. Over the years, the property had various owners and managers. From 2014 to 2020, Sue Dove was the owner of the premises. Recently, however, she has sold the property, and its management is currently unknown. Sue entered the industry because of her background as the director of a chamber of commerce. Additionally, when she was growing up, her family owned a motel, and so owning one was a callback of sorts to her childhood. After selling the property, she has since entered retirement.
