The Amberson House Bed and Breakfast

The Amberson House Bed and Breakfast

The Amberson House Bed and Breakfast is a three-story building with seven rooms available for guests to rent. The bed and breakfast can be found in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, which is close to the border between Maryland and Pennsylvania. The Amberson House Bed and Breakfast is one of the most historical buildings in the town as it was built in the late 1800s and has seen many renovations to preserve its history. The property is open year-round and typically sees an increase in guests during the summer months. The Appalachian Trail can be found in the area and allows guests to hike or bike along with a number of other trails available for the same activities.

About

The Amberson House Bed and Breakfast has seven suites that guests can choose from when making arrangements to come to Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, for a stay. The guest rooms are located on the first and second floors, and each room is uniquely named and decorated. The name of the room tends to hint at how the room will look in design. For example, The Captain's Quarters is a room with nautical themes and oceanic touches. Out of Africa is the name of another room that has decorations that portray themes from Africa, like the wildebeest hide which hangs on the wall. Another room that the owner of The Amberson House Bed and Breakfast mentions is popular amongst those who have stayed in the past is the Castle Room. The Castle Room has medieval decorations along the walls and similarly themed furniture. One unique thing about the Castle Room is that it has a claw-footed soaking tub in the bathroom.

Regardless of which room a guest decides to rent for their stay, each room will come with access to Wi-Fi, linen towels, a mini-refrigerator, microwave, and a private bathroom. Guests who have a room at The Amberson House Bed and Breakfast will also have access to the pastry case, where they can grab a snack, as well as the coffee bar, which is stocked regularly. The bed and breakfast has a shuttle that can take guests to and from local ski or golf resorts, The Appalachian Trail, and other locations in the vicinity. For a fee, the guests can have the shuttle take them to further places like the airport or other trails in the area, though if the location is nearby, then no fee is required.

Every morning, breakfast is served as a three-course meal. Breakfast rotates so that guests staying multiple days will not get the same meal each morning. On a regular basis, the employees will set out a number of pastries, like French toast, cinnabons, or casseroles. Then, they will have fruit cups with every plate, which may consist of fruits like cherries, kiwis, and other kinds of berries. The main dish changes from day to day, but in the past, they have served dishes like egg strata with vegetables, asparagus, and various kinds of cheeses and peppers. The main course is also usually served with a small salad and some hash browns and bacon. Breakfast is served at 7:30 and is available until 10:30, but guests can show up any time between those times for food. They get many hikers in the morning that come specifically for trails, like the Appalachian Trail. For those who are going to leave earlier in the morning, they can make a breakfast-to-go bag with some food that can be eaten quickly or taken for the trip.

Also inside the building is a women's parlor, a men's parlor, a library, and a music room for visitors to use. All of these locations offer places for guests to sit and do some more leisurely activities. On the outside of the property, guests can spend time in the yards where there is a private garden and games like horseshoes and cornhole. There is also a firepit that is regularly kept lit. A covered terrace in the back overlooks the grassy area and can be used for small events like wedding receptions, family reunions, and others for up to 25 people in total. The yard has many open areas, as well as many shaded areas, due to the trees in the backyard.

The owner, whose name is Emily, can provide guests with a number of activities to do outside of The Amberson House Bed and Breakfast. Due to the wide expanse of history that the area has, there are a number of museums. The Gettysburg National Military Park Museum is one location that the owner recommends guests spend time at. Located in Gettysburg, the museum offers historical monuments regarding The Battle of Gettysburg and has many items from that era for guests to look at and learn about. Across the border and into the state of Maryland, visitors can see the Antietam National Battlefield, which is where one noteworthy battle took place during The Civil War in 1862.

If a guest asks, the owner can recommend several different restaurants for guests to eat at. The first restaurant she likes to tell guests about is called Sapporo, which is a high-end Japanese restaurant. Another eatery she may recommend to guests is called The Waynesburger. At The Waynesburger, they serve a variety of milkshakes and burgers.

Culture

The owner, Emily, explains that the goal of the property is to create a welcoming and relaxing space for visitors to enjoy their time. The common rooms have things like games and television for them to use, as well as extra seating. She explains that she enjoys holding small events at the property and being able to point her visitors to all of the places she enjoys going to in town.
The Amberson House Bed and Breakfast has several policies put in place, and the owner asks everyone who visits the property to abide by them. One policy that is in effect is that there is no smoking allowed inside any of the rooms. Another important policy that they have is that pets are not permitted inside any of the guest suites or common rooms, as they have no capability to accommodate them. Quiet time is enforced on the property, starting at 8:00 P.M. When quiet time starts, guests are allowed to spend time on the property as long as they aren't creating any loud noise.

The city of Waynesboro is situated right next to some very well-known and important locations that had historical battles take place, like Gettysburg and Antietam. As such, history is one thing that the town is more known for. The Appalachian Trail is a popular trail that can be found in the vicinity and is one location where guests can go for a hike or bike ride.
Emily has owned The Amberson House Bed and Breakfast for less than two years, but in that amount of time, the establishment has received a number of reviews from people who have stayed there in the past. Guests typically mention in their reviews the quality of the customer service they received while at the bed and breakfast as well as the spaciousness of it. One visitor to the Amberson House left a review that reads, "Our host 'Jaws' was the best. He made sure we had everything we needed and cooked a wonderful breakfast that we ate outside on the porch. Our room was an African-themed room with access to a lovely porch overlooking the backyard. The house has many common rooms to hang out in, one being a small library. Clean, beautifully decorated, and well run."

History

The property is located on Main Street, which has some of the more historic locations in the town. The Amberson House Bed and Breakfast is no exception. The building that makes up The Amberson House Bed and Breakfast was originally built in 1887, over 130 years ago. There have been a number of changes made to the property to keep it refurbished and comfortable over the years, on the inside as well as the outside. Over the years, a majority of the house has seen a complete makeover. The walls have been repainted, and the floors have been fixed. The owners have added new furniture in addition to refining and stabalizing the foundation.

The current owner, Emily, is not the original owner, as she purchased the property in March of 2020. Emily explains that she decided to buy the property because she really liked it. Before owning it, she had stayed there often to see family that lived in the area. The bed and breakfast has been around since 2003, which is when it was converted from a private residence into a place of public lodging. There were already a large number of renovations done once it had been converted to a bed and breakfast, so she just continued with the renovations that had already begun when she took ownership. Her goal for the property is to expand and give more people the opportunity to stay at The Amberson House Bed and Breakfast.

Before it was a bed and breakfast, it was a living space that was owned by a doctor with the last name of Amberson that helped soldiers in both The Battle of Gettysburg and The Battle of Antietam. He had seven children, with the last child living in the house until the 1990s. That is when it was purchased by the previous owners and turned into a bed and breakfast. The previous owners named the bed and breakfast Burgundy Lane Bed and Breakfast, but when the current owner, Emily, purchased the property from them, she decided to rename it to the Amberson House Bed and Breakfast, in honor of the family that had been there for almost a century.
