The Keaau Place

The Keaau Place is a house on a one-acre property in Hawaiian Paradise Park, a residential subdivision on Hawaii's Big Island. The house offers two private studios for reservation. They each include queen beds, fully-equipped kitchenettes, microwaves, access to laundry machines, and private covered back decks for lounging. Each patron has access to free parking that is offered at the house. Breakfast is not offered at The Keaau Place because the kitchens are fully equipped and come with the cooking tools guests may need to prepare meals. One of the main draws to the area of the Big Island is the active volcano and its corresponding lava fields. Guests can also participate in hiking, fishing, boating, sailing, snorkeling, diving tours, whale-watching, and island trips.

About

The Keaau Place is a house in Hawaiian Paradise Park on the Big Island of Hawaii, a relatively large subdivision on the eastern side of the island. It is approximately four miles from the Keaau town Center, 9 miles from the town of Pahoa, and about 12 miles from the Hilo International Airport.

The property consists of a single house on a one-acre plot of land. The house includes two private studios and a space for the caretakers. Both studios offer queen beds, fully equipped kitchenettes, dishwashers, microwaves, TVs, and access to private covered decks at the back of the house. Towels, blow dryers, and UV water filtration devices are also provided in each unit. Both studios have access to laundry facilities. The private decks offer propane barbecue grills, tables, and chairs. Tanna, the property owner, explains that these decks serve as the main lounge area. Free parking is available at The Keaau Place, and information regarding car rentals and island activities is shown on its website. There is no charge for internet, and there are no "hidden" resort fees, remarks Tanna. However, breakfast is not provided due to the inclusion of the kitchenettes.

Tanna further describes her house as a modern-style building. The interior is composed of hardwood floors and white walls. The studios include couches, furnishings, and tables. One noteworthy detail is the studios do not have stoves. Instead, they have a portable induction hot plate and toaster oven.

The Keaau Place is located at an elevation of 800 feet in Hawaiian Paradise Park, which, according to Tanna, is the second-largest subdivision in the United States. As such, each property is about one acre in size. The establishment has several gardens, trees, and indigenous Hawaiian plants across its land, as the subdivision is in a rainforest. The Keaau Place is about 2.5 miles from the eastern oceanfront.

Local attractions include the beach and ocean to the east, local waterfalls near the city of Hilo, and a historic town where visitors can learn about Hawaii's history. Tanna also points out that the lava fields and the central Big Island volcano are a common draw for guests. She remarks that many of them travel to her property just to see the lava. Furthermore, the Imiloa Astronomy Center, which is only 12 miles from Hawaiian Paradise Park, can give visitors access to live views from space. Additional attractions include snorkeling and diving trips, fishing tours, cruises, sailing tours, island tours, and whale-watching trips. Regarding local dining areas, a nearby area called Pahoa has several restaurants that have been recently installed.

Culture

Tanna, the owner of The Keaau Place, explains that she wants her patrons to feel at home while staying at her property. She also says she would like them to feel they have everything they need or would have access to at their regular home. As such, guests are provided with a keycode to access their studios. According to Tanna, interactions between her visitors and her depend on what the visitors want. She also adds that, because of the keycodes, occupants are not required to interact with a caretaker upon check-in.

When asked about what makes The Keaau Place unique, Tanna explains that its "ambiance" allows people to feel peace and quiet, especially when outside on the private decks. Tanna remarks that visitors have appreciated the property's cleanliness. One tourist review says, "This place was nice and relaxing. It had almost everything you could need. [There is no] oven, but the unit did have a hotplate, microwave, full fridge & freezer, washer, dryer, personal bathroom, air-conditioning (which worked well), travel brochures, smart tv (with Roku), etc. It really had almost everything you could need." According to Tanna, several repeat guests are received each year.

While staying at The Keaau Place, patrons are asked to adhere to a few policies. Because of insurance policies, children must be 12 years old or older to stay at the house. Each studio occupies a maximum of three people; two for the queen bed and one for an additional bed that can be assembled in each studio. Pets are not allowed, as Tanna declares her house an "allergy-free" property. Finally, quiet time is from 9:00 PM to 9:00 AM.

The Keaau Place is operational throughout the year. According to Tanna, the best season is anytime the volcano is active, affirming that the volcano is the main attraction for her guests. She explains that the majority of her visitors are couples, although an additional 15 to 20% of her clientele consists of people requiring temporary housing while they work in the area.

History

The Keaau Place was built in 2007, and Tanna is the original and current owner of the business. The house was originally a residential home until it was remodeled within the first few years of its acquisition. Tanna bought The Keaau Place to give her visitors a place to stay while they traveled to see the active Big Island volcano, and she accomplishes this with other properties she has throughout the various Hawaiian islands. Tanna enjoys telling people about the Hawaiian Islands' development and culture. She remarks that she tries to help other people learn to respect and take care of the land.

Since owning The Keaau Place, Tanna has installed solar panels and converted to an "almost 100% solar" business. She has also worked in the yard, removing invasive plant species throughout the years and conserving the indigenous plants that grow on her property.
