The Kenwood Gables Boutique Bed and Breakfast is an adult-only retreat in Kenwood, a historic neighborhood in St. Petersburg, Florida. The restored home has five rooms available for reservation, all of which have private bathrooms and themed decorations curated from all around the world. The owners Reymond and Jayson, opened the property in 2019 after installing a pool and renovating the entire interior. Breakfast is served daily with homemade pastries, omelets, fresh fruit, and coffee. The home is located just five minutes from Downtown St. Petersburg and thirty minutes from the Tampa and St. Pete-Clearwater International Airports, along with many well-known beaches. The property is open year-round.
The Kenwood Gables Boutique Bed and Breakfast is a renovated 1920's home. The gray and white house takes up two lots on a corner in the historic neighborhood of Kenwood. A yard surrounds the home with layers of shrubbery, green grasses, and flowers. The revived home has many windows and a unique shape with a sloping roof and elegant trim work on the exterior. In the home's back yard, there is a large common area with shaded seating areas and a pool and hot tub surrounded by lounge chairs. Outdoor gardens surround the common areas, and well-lit cobblestone pathways wind throughout the yard. Patios with outdoor furniture look out over the backyard, and two pergolas with misting fans sit by the pool.
Inside of the Kenwood Gables Boutique Bed and Breakfast are two sitting areas, a large dining room, and an entry room with high ceilings. With a history in design and an appreciation for history, the owners Reymond and Jayson have spent months collecting antique and unique décor to add to their newly renovated bed and breakfast. The home is bright with white walls and colorful furniture and art. All of the original trim and flooring was preserved in the home when under renovation, including the fireplace. Each of the five bedrooms in the bed and breakfast have a specific theme whether it be bohemian, elegant, eclectic, or modern.
The Nomad Suite is located on the main floor of the home and was inspired by world travel with a jewel-toned color palette, assorted textures, hand-crafted tiles, and hand-embroidered fabrics from Africa, Thailand, India, and Vietnam. This room has a king bed, a sofa bed, and direct access to the main deck and pool in the backyard. The Castaway Suite is also located on the main floor and is the most spacious of the rooms with a king-sized bed and a queen sofa bed. The room is paradise island-inspired with chic coastal décor and an all-white tiled bathroom with a soaking tub and glass shower. French doors open out to a large deck with a shaded seating area overlooking the pool.
The Brewton Room is named after the original homeowner, Mrs. Grace Brewton. The room is located on the second floor and is decorated in a colorful bohemian chic style. This room has south and east-facing windows and a king-sized bed. The Astoria Room is also on the second floor and is inspired by a neighborhood in New York City. Astoria is filled with designer books, photos, artwork, and furniture with a rustic color pallet. The Burlington Room is also themed after New York City with vintage décor and a queen-sized bed. The rooms come equipped with extra linens, towels, wash clothes, luxury soaps and lotions, and games to play. In addition to a private bathroom, each room also has private air-condition and heating units, a flat-screen television, mini-fridge, coffee maker, a digital wall safe, and ironing supplies.
Breakfast is served every morning in the dining room at the Kenwood Gables Boutique Bed and Breakfast. Guests are welcome to take their meal up to their rooms, out on the patio, or down by the pool. The breakfast each day consists of granola, muesli, yogurt, fresh fruit, pastries, croissants, omelets, specialty coffees, and organic orange juice. Almost all of the ingredients used to cook the morning meal are purchased from local vendors. Those with special dietary requirements can contact the property managers with suggestions, and they can try to accommodate those needs.
Many local artists live in the neighborhood, and art shows are held in the area often. In the center of Pinellas County, the neighborhood is thirty minutes from Tampa International Airport and twenty minutes from St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport. Just a short drive down the road is Downtown St. Petersburg and gulf coast beaches. Visitors can spend time at the Dali Museum, Clearwater Marine Aquarium or visit the St. Petersburg Saturday Morning Market. There are many nearby restaurants and bakeries within walking distance of the bed and breakfast, such as 400 Beach Seafood and Tap House and the Valhalla Bakery.
Reymond and Jayson the owners and managers of the Kenwood Gables Boutique Bed and Breakfast created the bed and breakfast as a retreat for all of their visitors. They want everyone who passes through their doors to feel relaxed and like they have entered an oasis. The backyard is completely fenced and walled in, with trees and gardens surrounding its borders. This was essential to the owners to have for their guests to feel like they are in a serene, safe space apart from the busy everyday world. The bright white walls, big windows, and tall ceilings make the inside of the home feel open and airy. Cleaners come to the house regularly to deep clean the floors, windows, and furniture. This ensures the guest areas are always clean and uncluttered.
In an effort to make the bed and breakfast more personal, quiet and private, no pets or children are allowed in the home. "We have designed our home and bed and breakfast environment for adults seeking a relaxing vacation," say the owners Reymond and Jayson. Furniture has been tactfully laid out in the outdoor areas to have shade during the hottest times of day, and misting fans are nestled in the gardens and pergolas to cool guests down. Pool loungers and drink trays line the poolside, and each private patio has cushioned seating and tables. These spaces are all separated to give guests privacy.
Guests often leave positive reviews regarding the layout of the property, pool, decorations, hospitality, and privacy of the neighborhood. "Charming Tudor home beautifully restored. We stayed in the newer addition, which was spacious and beautifully decorated. The large soaking tub was convenient, and the french doors of the suite open up to a deck overlooking the pool. The hosts are gracious and welcoming. They provide a lot of information to visit the area. The home is located in a friendly and walkable neighborhood. Breakfast is made to order eggs or omelets and includes your choice of fresh-cut fruit, juice, coffee, and homemade pastries," said a recent guest at the bed and breakfast.
Reymond and Jayson greet each of their guests upon arrival and routinely check in with them, making sure to always have one of them at the front desk or walking the property grounds to answer questions and address any concerns their guests may have. A book of references to local activities and restaurants is placed in each room for guests to reference. Even though the hosts enjoy visiting with their guests, they also recognize that some may not wish to interact and will give guests space to enjoy their vacation in privacy.
Reymond and Jayson are the owners of the Kenwood Gables Bed and Breakfast. Reymond is from Cardenas, Cuba, and lived many years in Havana as well. In his thirties, he started a bed and breakfast himself, hosting guests from Europe, Canada, and America. He taught himself English and decided to move to New York in 2015. Jayson was born in Manila, Philippines, and moved to the United States in the 1980s with his family. He spent over twenty years in the fashion industry. The men met each other at a bar in New York and decided to start their own bed and breakfast together. They brought their two dogs along with them on their journey in creating the Kenwood Gables Bed and Breakfast.
Built in 1929, the home was owned by a successful insurance seller from Washington DC. She retired after the home was built and had it lifted up and moved to the St. Petersburg’s Historic Kenwood neighborhood. It was originally built as a two-story home, but another level was added on. After purchasing the home, Reymond and Jayson spent a year adding bathrooms to all of the rooms, growing flower gardens, placing décor, building a pool, replicating and replacing trim work and windows, and adding patios onto the rooms. The bed and breakfast was opened for reservations in late 2019. Reymond and Jayson enjoy connecting with their guests and inviting them into their space to relax and reset.
