The White Gables Inn

The White Gables Inn

The White Gables Inn, situated in Fryeburg, Maine, lies between the Saco River and Lovewell Pond, close to the Vermont border. Offering four units year-round, guests are invited to utilize the communal spaces and outdoor patio at their convenience. The owners want all visitors to feel comfortable and welcome. In hopes of providing that type of atmosphere, a policy is in place to minimize noise from evening until morning, and pets cannot be accommodated on the premises. Complimentary breakfast is provided for guests with reservations, and arrangements can be made with the owners for hosting small gatherings, from bridal showers to family reunions. While the inn was established in 2000, its history traces back to earlier times when it served as a private residence and later as a medical practice center for a local doctor.

The White Gables Inn is situated within a historic homestead, providing four units for guests. These units are available for reservations year-round. According to the owner, the "Cure Sarge" room stands out as many people's favorite, featuring a more spacious ensuite bathroom complete with a Jacuzzi tub. Upon arrival, guests are given access to common areas on the first floor, including a breakfast room and a living room that opens onto a seasonal deck. These spaces provide opportunities for relaxation and socializing, as they are equipped with amenities such as games, a television, and complimentary snacks and beverages. Additionally, guests can see views of the mountains from select rooms and the back deck.

Accommodations at The White Gables Inn are uniquely decorated, each with a private bathroom in an effort for guests' to have comfort and privacy. While only two of the four units have ensuite bathrooms, all accommodations offer modern amenities. The décor reflects the property's historical roots, with subtle nods to its farmhouse origins preserved throughout. Visitors can also explore the surrounding area or unwind in the backyard garden area, which provides a glimpse of the 16-acre property. Recent developments include the addition of walking trails, allowing guests to explore the landscape at their leisure.

Each morning, guests are given a cooked-to-order breakfast served in the breakfast room, featuring a rotating menu of homemade meals such as pancakes, eggs, and freshly baked goods. The innkeepers can accommodate dietary restrictions or special requests, given that they are informed before a guest's stay. Additionally, the innkeepers have many personal favorite places to eat nearby for those looking for dinner recommendations. Some of those places include 302 West Smokehouse & Tavern, Oxford House Inn & Restaurant, and the Fryeburg Kitchen and Market.

With a focus on creating a relaxed atmosphere, the innkeepers of The White Gables Inn aim to foster a sense of familiarity and ease. One of the key elements in crafting this ambiance is the attention to detail, including accommodating guests' needs. Visitors are encouraged to socialize as much or as little as they desire, whether seeking social interactions or quiet solitude.

The owners seek to maintain the establishment’s atmosphere, with policies in place in an effort to allow fellow guests a more peaceful stay, including quiet hours and a pet-free policy. The inn is also open to hosting small gatherings or get-togethers, hoping to provide a more intimate setting for special occasions such as bridal showers or family reunions.

Operating year-round, The White Gables Inn welcomes a diverse range of visitors, although couples, particularly those in their 30s to 70s, form the majority of them. Repeat guests are typical for the business, and the owners enjoy welcoming patrons back to their property. Those who have been to the inn sometimes leave reviews of their experience. One person wrote, “The rooms were clean, and the bed was comfortable. We stayed for breakfast, which was amazing. The dining room was stocked with snacks and tea as well. The hosts were very accommodating.”

The White Gables Inn has a history dating back to the 19th century. Initially constructed in 1820 by Dr. Rule Barrows, the property served as both a residence and a medical practice, reflecting the doctor's commitment to the temperance movement prevalent in Maine during his time. Dr. Barrows utilized the front portion of the house as his office, where he attended to patients.

The property transitioned through various owners throughout the years, primarily serving as a residential space until the 20th century. In the 1940s and 1950s, Dr. Gore, another physician, continued the tradition of using the house for medical consultations while also maintaining its residential character. It was in the late 1990s that Margaret Cugini became the new owner and transformed and renovated the property into a bed and breakfast.

In 2000, the White Gables Inn officially opened its doors to guests, offering a blend of historic charm and modern comfort under Margaret's stewardship. In 2018, the property was purchased by Stephen and Mike Davis, who were drawn to the farmhouse and enjoyed the opportunity to become the new owners.

Since taking ownership, Stephen and Mike have embarked on various maintenance projects in an effort to maintain the property's integrity and enhance its appeal. From repairing the driveway and parking area to exploring future improvements such as a backyard deck renovation and patio addition, Stephen and Mike have strived to retain the inn's history while trying to make the business better for occupants.

With a passion for hospitality and a love for culinary arts, Stephen and Mike delight in welcoming guests. Whether they are cooking breakfast or engaging in conversations with visitors, they try to make The White Gables Inn a positive experience for patrons.
