Culture

The manager of Tilghman Island Inn, Sherri Madl, says that the owners and staff strive to make their guests feel “at home” during their stay. Sherri mentions that she will try to recognize the specific needs of those staying with her and then strive to help fulfill those. Additionally, a variety of amenities—including pet-friendly rooms, a smoking area outside—are offered in the hopes of accommodating more people’s needs. It should also be noted that a quiet time is set in place at 10 p.m. for the benefit of other visitors.

The inn hosts a range of events and activities, including weddings, small conferences, and retreats for smaller groups. A maximum of 40 people can be present during such events, as the property can only accommodate smaller numbers. Besides those that are visiting for their specific events, Tilghman Island Inn caters to a wide demographic of visitors, from elderly couples celebrating their wedding anniversary to families with young children, many of which are repeat guests.

Those who have stayed at the property have left many reviews highlighting different aspects of the business. One of the more commonly noted aspects is the staff. One occupant wrote, “This is a good example of hardworking owners doing what they can to make this place successful. The location was wonderful, the rooms were nice, and the staff was great.” Another patron highlighted the atmosphere of the property, writing, “This is a quaint and peaceful inn right on the water. The staff was very welcoming and helpful. The rooms are nicely renovated, and the grounds are well-landscaped. The views of the sunset and boats entering/leaving the marina made our stay quite entertaining.”

The manager of the property mentions that their bartender, Michael, is another part of the business that many people have enjoyed. He is known for his singing and has a reputation that extends beyond the inn, with patrons often calling ahead to see if he is working on a given night.

Guests are able to visit the nearby town if they would like to explore the area. Sherri says that Tilghman Island Country Store and Poplar Island are two places that people frequently visit. When it comes to dining recommendations, the manager suggests that people visit Tickler's Crab Shack & Restaurant, Chesapeake Landing, and Ava's Pizzeria & Wine Bar. Ava's is known for their brick oven pizza, while Tickler's Crab Shack & Restaurant and Chesapeake Landing offer a range of seafood dishes.

History

Tilghman Island Inn is a unique property that started out as a fish processing plant before being transformed into a restaurant and later an inn. The exact date of when the inn itself was established is unknown, but it has undergone several ownership changes over the years, having been purchased by the current owners in 2018. They then renovated it, taking over a year to complete the renovations before opening the inn to guests. They have made significant changes to the property, including expanding the outdoor deck, opening an outside bar, and adding a floating dock to the marina.

The owners have different expertise, one being a chef for over 30 years and the other being in the landscape industry for over 25 years. With their background and knowledge of other companies in the area, they desired to make a business that could emulate a home-like feeling for those that stay with them. The owners and staff enjoy meeting new people and strive to meet each need that is presented to them.
