About

Victorian Veranda Country Inn is a Victorian-style home built-in 1999. The home is located in the countryside of Kansas, just outside of the university city of Lawrence, surrounded by rolling hills of farmland. The inn sits on eight acres of land with a large barn for venues, flower gardens, and a covered pergola. Cobblestone walkways and thick wood fencing surround the property, providing privacy for each guest on the grounds. Two large parking spaces are on the property for guests at the inn and venue.

Inside the two-story, Victorian-style home are ten guest rooms. Three of the rooms are on the first floor, along with a large dining room and sitting parlor. The remaining seven rooms are located on the second level of the home. Each room at the Victorian Veranda Country Inn has a king or queen-sized bed, a dresser, a private bathroom, a television, and a dresser. Some of the rooms have a second-day bed that can sleep an additional person, and two of the rooms have windows surrounding three of the four walls looking out over the nearby countryside. The other bedrooms have windows looking out over the gardens and venue grounds.

Breakfast is served every morning at eight-thirty in the breakfast room. The breakfast room is surrounded by sunny bay windows looking toward the sunrise with six different tables for guests to sit at while they eat. For breakfast, classic dishes such as eggs, sausage, and potatoes are served, along with the occasional pancakes. Fresh coffee, orange juice, and basic pastries are always available in the breakfast room.

Victorian Veranda Country Inn is open year-round, with an increase of visitors from May to June and September to November. These months are popular for the warm weather, wedding season, and the activities happening in Lawrence most often to do with the university. The wedding venue barn and gardens are large and can accommodate up to fifty people to celebrate. Food, a photographer, seating, music, and a variety of other amenities are offered with each group's preferred wedding package.

Although Victorian Veranda Country Inn is located in an area surrounded by farmland for miles, the downtown area of Lawrence is barely ten minutes drive from the property. In the city, guests can visit the University of Kansas, local restaurants such as Big Mill and take classes from the culinary school in the area. Johnny's Tavern is a nearby bar just a few minutes from the inn.

Culture

The Phillips, who currently own the establishment, chose the location of the Victorian Veranda Country Inn because of the culture and environment it would create for its guests. The Inn is located a few miles outside of Lawrence, Kansas, in a primarily agricultural area surrounded by rolling hills, farms, and green countryside. There is little to no traffic in the area, so guests don't have to worry about sound or interruptions while staying in the inn and using the wedding venue. When first built, the property layout was well thought out, as every space was created with a guest's comfort in mind. The winding cobblestone walkways, well-maintained flower gardens, and bedrooms with windows for natural light and views of the surrounding countryside are examples of these details.

The hosts at the inn make an effort to get to know each guest who passes through the inn or uses their venue. They welcome each visitor, make them breakfast, and work to provide visitors with any accommodations they may need. The wedding venue was created to encourage family and large group gatherings with the goal of maintaining the tranquility and nature-oriented area of the countryside. The wedding planners and venue manager take care of all the details, so the future married couple and their guests can relax and enjoy their stay with rooms at the inn. Most of the guests who visit the inn without using the venue are older couples.

Guests often leave positive reviews regarding their opinions of some of the property's features, including the gardens, the various accommodations that are available, and the breakfasts that are served there. One guest in particular said, "My sister and I truly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful bed and breakfast. The gardens were beautiful, the huge veranda was relaxing and our room was so comfortable and clean. The breakfast was delicious and the conversations with the owners were delightful." The nearby town of Lawrence, Kansas, is home to the University of Kansas. Due to this, the city of Lawrence is comprised of a higher proportion of younger demographics and has many local attractions, restaurants, and a notable nightlife. Guests can spend a day in the city visiting local museums, historical buildings, and bars, then return to the Victorian Veranda Country Inn for peace and relaxation in the quiet countryside.

History

The Victorian Veranda Country Inn is owned and managed by Rob Phillips and his wife. After staying in multiple bed and breakfasts throughout Kansas and neighboring states, the Phillips decided they wanted to pursue of career in hospitality and innkeeping themselves. They spent years searching for a location that would work for their goals of the inn and soon came across the countryside outside of Lawrence, Kansas. The couple then built the ten guest room bed and breakfast. The location was selected because of its countryside appeal while being only a short drive from the city. The Victorian-style home was also built with a barn and pasture to start.

The barn held horses, and a variety of other animals were cared for on the property after it was built in 1999 for many years. Soon the Phillips were inspired to turn their large barn and eight acres of land into a wedding and party venue. They sold their animals and began the process of renovating their barn and planting gardens throughout their grounds. The Phillips enjoy welcoming all manner of guests to their inn and taking care of the gardens and landscape throughout the inn grounds. As they have run the property for over twenty years, they plan to sell their property or pass it onto family when they retire in the coming years.
