Waipio Wayside Inn

Waipio Wayside Inn is a bed and breakfast located on the Island of Hawaii along the north shore. It sits on a little more than one acre and is 10 minutes from the north beach. Initially a sugar plantation home, the house provides a general look into the history of old Hawaii with its vintage-themed 1930s-style rooms. Close by are several rural farm tours and the Kalopa State Park that can allow guests to enjoy activities such as horseback riding, hiking, and others. The property was built in 1932 and has been running as a bed and breakfast since 1988. The owner, Jacqueline, remarks that she wants guests to feel as if it were "their own home" when staying at her property.

About

Waipio Wayside Bed and Breakfast Inn is located in Honokaa, Hawaii. The property is found on the north side of the Island of Hawaii, about 10 minutes from the beach. Each room in the house has a variety of vintage decorations, as the owner describes the overall style of the home to be "vintage Hawaii-themed." A total of five rooms are available for reservation: the Birds Eye Room, Library Room, Chinese Room, Plantation Room, and Moon Room. The owner, Jacqueline, explains that the Birds Eye Room and the Chinese Room are the most commonly reserved units. She explains that the Birds Eye Room is a main bedroom with a direct ocean view and is somewhat larger than the other units. It is also located in the back of the property, providing more privacy for occupants. The Chinese Room also has a view of the ocean, which Jacqueline believes is what makes it more sought-after. A variety of Chinese antiques additionally adorn the unit. It should be noted that each room comes with Wi-Fi, robes, and private bathrooms for guest use. There are several common areas for patrons, such as the dining room, living room, gazebo, and upper and lower deck. A reasonably large TV and seating are available in the living room.

The house is situated on over an acre of land and has a garden setting with a variety of flowers and trees. These trees include avocado, orange, lemon, white pineapple, and passion fruit. The beach is about 1,000 feet away from the property. The owner describes the surrounding area as rural, private, and secluded. Located about 10 minutes from the property is the historic sugar town of Honokaa. Aside from this historic district, there are a variety of other attractions within the vicinity of the property, such as a chocolate farm tour, tea farm tour, and vanilla farm tour. Jacqueline explains that the area is "well known for its food production sites" that can give guests an opportunity to learn more about how these specific foods are farmed and developed.

Breakfast is served every day in the dining room at 8 a.m. Jacqueline describes the breakfast they serve as "organic and local." She explains they strive to find and serve the "freshest Hawaiian food" for the guests. They can make accommodations for dietary restrictions; however, they ask that patrons make those requests upon reservation.

Culture

One of the owners, Jacqueline, states that she wants guests to feel as if the Waipio Wayside Bed and Breakfast Inn were "their own home." They strive to provide this atmosphere through frequent interaction with their visitors. She explains that she strives to greet guests as they arrive and offer them a batch of cookies or brownies. Other things Jacqueline aims to do to help guests feel more welcome are assisting them during the reservation process and informing them about the area. One former patron appreciated the hospitality as they commented in a review, "This was a very good place to rest up if you are traveling north side of Big Island. The place is cozy, and the landlord is such a nice person." Jacqueline is also willing to give suggestions for different hikes and other dining options that are nearby.

Jacqueline suggests three locations in the town of Waipio for dining, which include Forc, Merrinans, and Moa. She describes Forc as a seasonal restaurant constantly changing its menu to serve fresh meat and fish. She says that they serve unique local Hawaiian dishes that guests can enjoy. Merrinans is located in Waipio and is similar to Forc. However, they do not change their menu. Moa is a Japanese restaurant that was started by a couple from Tokyo.

There are a few events that the Waipio Wayside Inn can host for those who are hoping to hold their celebrations at the establishment. Small weddings, family reunions, and retreats are a few of the more common events that can take place at the inn. As a pastime, guests can visit the town of Honokaa to browse the old sugar town and its history, along with the old shops and restaurants. Nearby is the Kalopa State Park, which provides opportunities for hiking, sightseeing, horseback riding, and other outdoor recreational activities.

The inn has a few policies that they ask guests to follow. COVID-19 vaccines are required for all adults and children 15 years or older to stay at Waipio Wayside. They also ask guests to wear masks inside the building, with the exception of breakfast time and when enjoying beverages. Patrons are to refrain from smoking while inside the house as well. Moreover, pets are not permitted inside the establishment. Jacqueline mentions that they encourage people staying in the house to be conscientious of their noise level past 10 p.m. In these later hours, they also ask that guests avoid taking late-night showers.

History

The house was originally built in 1932 as a place of residence for a superintendent of a sugar plantation. At the time, the surrounding area in Honokaa, Hawaii, was well known for its sugar production. The house was used as such until the current owner, Jacqueline, bought the property in 1988. She explains she was looking for a lifestyle change and fell in love with Hawaii. When she bought the house that year, she converted the house into a bed and breakfast. She explains her favorite part of her job is meeting the patrons, getting to know them, and hearing their stories from around the world.

Upon buying the house, it contained four rooms and two and a half bathrooms, to which Jacqueline has made upgrades to. The property now currently has six bedrooms and six bathrooms. She also added new waterlines and upgraded the electricity, plumbing, and roofing. Fixing the upper and lower decks, along with the pavilion, was also part of the renovations that she did.
