Regardless of which room type is chosen, those staying at the motel have access to smart televisions, complimentary WiFi, Ethernet ports, and local coffee from Shotgun House Roasters. Parking is also available on the grounds, in front of each unit. The owners—Matt and Taylor—hope that those staying with them can feel comfortable and relaxed while at the establishment. There are a variety of activities and attractions to be found near the property, such as Enchanted Rock State Natural Area and the Pacific War Museum.

About

The Frederick Motel is a “motor court style” motel located in Fredericksburg, Texas, according to one of the owners. The owner further explains that the design choice of motor court style found in each of the rooms was popularized in the “Route 66 days” of the 1950s. With 13 units available, the motel offers a range of options for guests. The motel has three room types: budget queen, standard queen, and queen suite. Matt Gutierrez, one of the owners of the motel, says that the queen suite is the most popular option, providing a slightly larger space with a table, chairs, and a small sofa. Each room features a 12-inch memory foam mattress, retro fridges, microwaves, and mini iron boards. The bathrooms offer updated fixtures, namely rain-style showerheads and bathtubs in select rooms. Matt says that the property style is a “minimalist take on the historic motor court style,” with a variety of updated amenities included in a stay.

Each unit at the Frederick Motel is equipped with smart locks, allowing patrons to enter their rooms using personalized four-digit codes. Smart TVs are supplied in every room, enabling access to streaming apps. Complimentary Wi-Fi and an Ethernet port are available for internet connectivity. Also provided for visitors is a standard drip coffee maker with locally roasted coffee by Shotgun House Roasters as well as bathroom amenities, including organic shampoo, conditioner, body gel, face soap, and lotion. Additionally, each room features a small table and chairs to add more seating options for those staying at the establishment. Regarding the amenities at the property, Matt says he and Taylor, his wife and co-owner, "want guests to feel relaxed and at home during their stay. Providing all of the necessary amenities and a quiet environment is our priority."

The property does not have a lounge, lobby, or dining room; however, each unit has outdoor seating available, and patrons can enjoy the grassy areas with spots shaded by nearby trees. The motel is currently working on creating a food court area that will host food trucks, with the first one scheduled to open in 2023. There are also plans to add a coffee shop to the property.

Culture

Matt and Taylor, the Frederick Motel owners, hope to provide a relaxing environment for their guests by preparing each room with a variety of amenities and features. "Our goal is to create a welcoming atmosphere where visitors can unwind and enjoy the best of Fredericksburg. From the comfortable memory foam mattresses to our proximity to wineries, we strive to exceed our guests' expectations,” Matt says. Those who have stayed previously at the establishment have commented on the convenience of parking in front of their rooms, the amenities offered in each room, and the proximity to a variety of activities in the area. One former patron said, “Quaint roadside motel that appears to have been recently renovated; everything seemed very freshly done. The parking was super convenient as there are spaces directly outside each room, and the property itself was close to downtown. Our room was cozy and spotless, the bed was comfy, and the room was stocked with quality toiletries as well as local coffee that we really enjoyed.”

The Frederick Motel has several policies in place to provide a pleasant and enjoyable stay for those coming to see the area. Smoking is strictly prohibited inside the rooms, and there are designated smoking areas available outdoors for those who wish to smoke. Quiet hours are observed starting at 9:00 p.m. in the hopes of promoting an environment where people can rest and relax. While the motel is not pet-friendly, service animals are permitted in accordance with accessibility regulations. The minimum age requirement for booking a room is 18, and families with children can be accommodated as travel cribs are available upon request. Guests are advised to review the specific terms and conditions at the time of booking to understand the cancellation policy and any associated fees as well.

The Frederick Motel is located near several attractions that cater to different interests and can provide a range of experiences. One notable attraction is the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. This destination offers opportunities for hiking, climbing, and wildlife viewing. Visitors can explore the pink granite dome and observe panoramic views from the top. For history enthusiasts, the Pacific War Museum is another attraction located nearby. The museum commemorates the Pacific War and Admiral Nimitz, a native of Fredericksburg. It features exhibits and artifacts that shed light on the events and impact of the war. The city of Fredericksburg is also reportedly known for its wineries, and the Frederick Motel is located near the start of the 290 Wine Road, which marks the beginning of the Texas wine country. The city of Fredericksburg is home to over 100 wineries, and guests can go to tours and tastings at the local businesses. The motel's proximity to downtown Fredericksburg also offers the opportunity to experience a variety of shops, art galleries, and restaurants.

History

The Frederick Motel has a history that dates back to its establishment in the 1930s. Originally known as the Happy Court Motel, it opened in December 1947 with six units. In the late 1940s, an expansion took place at the establishment, and additional units were added as well as the Frederick Motel sign that still stands in front of the business today.

Under new ownership, the Frederick Motel has undergone multiple renovations and updates. The entire property was replumbed to bring the rooms up to current standards. Other amenities, such as 43-inch smart flat-screen TVs with access to personal streaming apps, WiFi, and hard-wired Ethernet connections, were also added to each room.

The motel is family owned and operated by Matt Gutierrez and his wife, Taylor. The couple met while working at a property in Austin, Texas. Matt and Taylor purchased the property in 2021, and both enjoy being able to have a family-owned business where they are able to see their children and focus on family while still working together to continue to update the property. The future plans for the motel include the creation of a food court area called the Happy Courts, paying homage to the motel's original name. This culinary area will hopefully offer a diverse range of dining options, providing guests with the opportunity to taste food from local businesses. The owners also have plans to add a coffee shop, offering grab-and-go items and small pastries.
