The Canyon Lake Region is located in Texas. The region wraps around various cities—most notably San Antonio, yet also including comparatively smaller cities such as Hunter, Fredricksburg, Castle Hills, San Marcos, Hye, and New Braunfels. The region is known for being home to Canyon Lake and San Antonio. There are attractions that various people visit annually within the region limits, such as the Natural Bridge Caverns, the Lakeside Golf Club, and Canyon Lake Gorge.[1] Things to do in San Antonio are the San Antonio Zoo, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Extreme Escape Stone Oak, the Alamo, Sea World, the San Antonio Museum of Art, and Splashtown.[3] The Canyon Lake Region has an average high temperature of about 86 degrees Fahrenheit. The low average temperature is about 47 degrees. It rains the most in May, July, and September. It never snows in the region. The best time to visit because of the weather is from the beginning of October to the beginning of December for from the beginning of March to the beginning of May.[4]
The Canyon Lake Region is named after Canyon Lake, which is the largest lake within the area. Also in the region is the city of San Antonio, which is one of Texas's larger and more populated cities. Other cities within the region include San Marcos, New Braunfels, Cain City, Fredricksburg, Spring Branch, and Castle Hills. Canyon Lake's geography allows for activities such as boating, swimming, tubing, canoeing, paddleboarding, and fishing. Near the lake, some of the most popular ventures are Lakeside Golf Club, Natural Bridge Caverns, and Canyon Lake Gorge. The Natural Bridge Caverns are caverns that people can tour and explore. Most of these caverns are underground. Canyon Lake Gorge is a large gorge that people can walk in.[1] The most popular time to visit Canyon Lake is in March and July.[4]
As previously mentioned, San Antonio, a city in the Canyon Lake Region, is home to many attractions. Some of these attractions include the Witte Museum, Extreme Escape Stone Oak, the Alamo, the San Antonio Museum of Art, San Antonio Zoo, Sea World, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, and Splashtown. The Witte Museum is home to many exhibits, including dinosaurs, People of the Pecos, and Texas Wild. The dinosaur exhibit has many dinosaur bones, models, and figures.[8]
Texas Wild features animals and plants. People of the Pecos talks about the history of the People of the Pecos. Extreme Escape Stone Oak is an escape room. Guests participating in the escape room have a time limit and can try to solve all of the puzzles before time runs out. The Alamo is a historic site located near San Antonio. There are exhibits of things from the history of the Alamo, along with different areas people can walkthrough. The San Antonio Museum of Art houses many different artworks. Some of these include statues, sculptures, paintings, and photography. The San Antonio Zoo has many animals living within it. Examples of these animals are giraffes, lions, elephants, and tigers. Sea World is an amusement park where people can interact with and learn about sea creatures. It also has a few rides and roller coasters. Six Flags Fiesta Texas is also an amusement park, and it is home to many roller coasters. Six Flags is known for having more extreme rides and roller coasters. Splashtown is a water park. It has features such as a large bucket that dumps water, splash features, pools, and a small play area for children with slides. Also in Splashtown are large slides that people can go down in tubes.[3]
The city of San Antonio gets around 34 million visitors annually. In 2017, $213.7 million was contributed to the city through tourism. The money went on to be used for schools. Also, because of the visitors, employment by the hospitality industry has increased to approximately 140,188 people, which is one out of every seven employed San Antonians. The annual payroll for these employees is $3.23 billion.[7]
Weather in the Canyon Lake Region fluctuates, with the warmest season being in August and the coldest time of the year in December. The average high weather in the region is approximately 86 degrees Fahrenheit while the average low is around 47 degrees Fahrenheit. It never snows in the region, but it does get rain. The chance of rain is highest in May, with other high chances in July and September. The chance of rain fluctuates, and the lowest chance of rain is in December and January. Because of the weather, the best time to visit the area is from the beginning of March to the beginning of May or from the beginning of October to the beginning of December.[4]
The Canyon Lake Region is made up of lakes, rivers, cities, and forests. There are hills in the region along with many trees. The zone goes up past Fredricksburg, Hye, Blanco, Woodcreek, and Kyle. The east side of the border stretches past San Marcos, Hunter, New Braunfels, and a few other cities. The south end of the border loops around San Antonio before going back up to the north end of the border.
Cities within the region include San Marcos, New Braunfels, San Antonio, Hye, Blanco, Hunter, Woodcreek, Fredricksburg, Kyle, and Castle Hills. Animals in the region include raccoons, opossums, armadillos, squirrels, rat snakes, diamondback rattlesnakes, and fox squirrels.[5] Plants in the Canyon Lake Region are ash trees, cherry trees, cedar trees, oak, pecans, sycamore, and holly.[6]
After the town of New Braunfels, a city in the Canyon Lake Region, was established by Prince Carl of Solms in 1845, many pioneers began to settle in the Guadalupe River Valley, which was located to the north of New Braunfels. The land was located 15 miles northwest of New Braunfels. James B. Crain was also given land, and on it, he created a mill. The land he was given was located at the Gum Spring, crossing 17 miles away from New Braunfels. Small communities grew around the mill. A post office was established in 1857 at Crain's Mill. In 1856 a man by the name of William Sattler opened a post office that was located a few miles away from his home in a place called Mountain Valley. In 1866, Crain's Mill post office was shut down. It was reopened later at Crane's Mill in 1874. Hancock got a post office in 1914.[2]
Each community had its own school, store, cotton gin, and dance hall. Many of the settlers were independent farmers. There were no church buildings in the area, so meetings were held in fields or at the Mountain Valley school. The economy began to slowly decline with the increase of boll weevils that caused the decrease in cotton in the 1920s. Sattler was virtually deserted by the 1950s, and Crane's Mill had a population of around 25 people. Hancock had about 40 residents still living within the community. With all the people inhabiting the area, water was needed. The Army Corps of Engineers began to build a dam in 1958, which was located 12 miles northwest of New Braunfels. The project created a new town called Canyon City. The dam was completed in 1964, followed by the impoundment of water.[2]
By 1968 the lake had filled 8,240 acres. The old towns of Crane's Mill and Hancock were submerged. Only a few buildings survived, and one of those buildings is the home of Martin Simon. The building still stands today. Before the lake was completely filled, the construction of dozens of new subdivisions along the mile lakefront had begun to be built. More than 80 new neighborhoods had been built around the lake by the 1980s. Sattler and Startzville became thriving commercial centers that served tourists from Austin and San Antonio. A museum was formed in 1994 to preserve the history of the area. The museum, which is called the Heritage Museum of Texas Hill County, has a site with over 350 dinosaur tracks. Six weeks of flooding in 2002 led to the formation of the Canyon Lake Gorge. It plunges deep at 80 feet at its deepest spot. The formation of the gorge exposed hidden rock formations, fossils, dinosaur footprints, and a fault line that hadn't been known before.[2]
Equinox Inn at Canyon Lake is located in Canyon Lake, Texas. Those staying at the property have six rooms to choose from to book, half of which look over the garden, and the others have a view of Canyon Lake. Breakfast is served at the inn every morning, and the meal changes daily. The owners, Keith and Darrin Hammons, mention that previous guests have enjoyed eating their meals out on the deck or in their respective rooms. Keith and Darrin hope those who stay with them will feel like they are a part of their family by the time they check out. They strive to help their patrons with their needs, and the owners hope that those who stay with them will return in the future to keep building a relationship with them.
