In addition, there are a few state parks and historic sites close by. The grounds are also just around the corner from the historic ranch of President Lyndon B. Johnson. Originally the motel was built by Tillie and Kermitt Hahne during President Johnson's term as a place for the president's entourage and visitors to stay.

About

The Stonewall Motor Lodge was built in 1986 and is located in Stonewall, Texas. Stonewall is a city in between Fredericksburg and Johnson City. The lodge is situated near the center of the Highway 290 Wine Trail, which means that guests don't have to go too far to find a number of activities to do.

The lodge sits among trees on a 3-acre lot. The property has a second-floor deck. This isn't the only unique feature outdoors, as a sitting area can also be found under the trees with lights, making it available at night. A barn also resides on the grounds providing an indoor and outdoor space where people can sit and visit.

The Stonewall Motor Lodge has twelve rooms, four cabins, and four RV sites. There are four different types of rooms at the lodge: the double queens, the kings, the press room, and the handicap accessible king. All of the rooms and cabins have Wi-Fi, a smart tv with Netflix included, a coffeemaker, a private bathroom with a hairdryer, and William Roam bath products.

The double queen rooms have two queen-sized beds and a maximum capacity of four people. It also comes with a mini-fridge. The king rooms differ from this in that they have a king-sized mattress and house up to two people. The handicap-accessible king is the same as the king, except it has a larger bathroom with a shower that is wheelchair friendly.

The cabins are generally more popular, perhaps due to their larger size and inclusion of more amenities. The cabins have what the rooms have, but in addition, they include a kitchen with a dining area, as well as a love seat with a coffee table. On the outside of each cabin are a few chairs on a covered porch. Cabin 15 has a king-sized bed, while cabins 16-18 each have two queen-sized beds.

The Stonewall Motor Lodge has an indoor guest lounge that people can use to sit, drink wine, or have coffee. A continental breakfast is also available for guests.

Culture

The Stonewall Motor Lodge is a roadside motel, but the owners strive to make it a fun and upscale motel. They want to provide a place where guests can relax and enjoy the property. The motel has been kept updated with the times and even has a self-check-in process, so guests don't have to deal with a front desk. The owners are not present too often, but they do have onsite managers to take care of visitors when needed.

A guest said about their experience, "Outstanding visit - rooms were clean, comfortable, and wonderfully decorated. We loved the attention paid to presenting the lodge as it might've looked when it opened in the mid-1960s with all the modern comforts."

On the grounds, there is a social space called the barn, with a mixture of an indoor and outdoor seating. Once a month, The Stonewall Motor Lodge hosts an event at the barn. There are a variety of things this could be. In the past, hosted events have included live music or food and drink brought by wineries. The barn is available for guests to spend time at while events aren't being held as well. It has a TV so that people can watch sports or other programs while spending time there.

There are a number of attractions in the area around The Stonewall Motor Lodge. Jenschke's Orchard is a place that is known for its peaches, as well as its corn maze in the fall. The Preserve is a place that guests can go to see Asian elephants. The Enchanted Rock is filled with outdoor activities that visitors can participate in, such as camping, hiking, and rock climbing.

One of the things that the area is known for is the Highway 290 Wine Trail. The wine trail has many wineries, breweries, and distilleries on it. Out of these, the owners recommend The Grape Creek Vineyards, The Kuhlman Cellars, and The Bingham Family Vineyards.

There are also lots of dining venues nearby. Stouts Trattoria at Grape Creek, which is a higher-end restaurant, is what the owners recommend. Other restaurants close to the motel are August E's and The Hye Market & Deli.

History

The Stonewall Motor Lodge was built in 1964. At the time, the city of Stonewall only had about 150 inhabitants. However, it was also home to President Lyndon B. Johnson's ranch. The presence of a president in town brought a lot of traffic and business into this small town. Every time the president visited the city, he brought an entourage of The Press Corps and Secret Service members. President Johnson and his wife had some old friends in the area, Tillie and Kermitt Hahne, who saw this increase in traffic and decided that Stonewall needed lodging for these frequent visitors.

Tillie and Kermitt decided to open the Stonewall Motel, and it only had 12 rooms upon opening. It was common for press photographers to stay here. They often would wait on Sundays for the president to head to church to snap a quick picture. The motel even had a dark room. This way, the photographers could take their photographs and then have a place to develop them. The darkroom has been converted into what is now the press room, a space that guests can reserve.

Anita, the current owner of The Stonewall Motor Lodge, has been in the lodging business before. She has owned Airbnb's in the past and has now owned this property for two years. Anita decided to purchase The Stonewall Motor Lodge because of its history. In addition, she liked its location in the midst of the Texas' winery industry. In her time with the property, Anita has made many changes. In fact, she has done a full renovation of the lodge. Additionally, there are plans to add one or two more cabins to the property.
