Texas is the 28th state of The United States of America and is located in the southern region of the country.[3] It can be found right on the southern border of The United States and is east of New Mexico, south of Oklahoma, southwest of Arkansas, and west of Louisiana. The capital of Texas is Austin which is located in the central part of the state.[11] Due to its location, there are a variety of biomes that can be found, including plains, forests, and mountains. Depending on which city one is located in, the temperature and weather can vary. The northern cities see much cooler temperatures in the summer and sometimes see frigid temperatures in the winter, while in the southern parts, there are warmer temperatures, especially near the Mexico border and the ocean.[6] The Texas flag has a single, white star which represents the state's independence it won from Mexico in the mid-1800s, soon after the land joined the United States.[1]
Texas is the second-largest state in both population size and land. According to The United States Census Bureau, as of 2019, there are just under 29 million people that are current and permanent residents of the state.[8] The only state with a higher population than Texas is California, which has over 39 million residents.[9] While English is the primary language, there are many people that speak Spanish in the state, nearly 30% of people that live there.[1]
There are a wide variety of things to see and do in Texas, from historical monuments and museums to theme parks and other entertainment. One of the biggest things that Texas is known for is The Alamo. Located in San Antonio, the Alamo is a historic structure that was built in the early 18th century by settlers from Spain. Initially, it was used for religious purposes before the mission was abandoned. When the Texas Revolution was beginning, The Alamo once again regained prominence and was used as a foothold for the Texans when fighting broke out. The Battle of the Alamo took place in 1836, and though every defender was killed in the battle, they succeeded in their goal of buying time for their reinforcements from other military branches and, a few months later, won the war. Today, it serves as a museum and allows guests to walk the grounds, visit the chapel, and explore its collection of artifacts and items from the 18th century.[2]
Another museum with a notable amount of history is The Sixth Floor Museum, which is found in the city of Dallas. The assassin who killed John F. Kennedy shot him from inside this building. The Sixth Floor Museum pays homage to the life and legacy of the former president. Visitors can walk through the building, learn about President Kennedy, and see the exact room on the sixth floor, hence the name of the museum, that the assassin fired from when he took the president's life.[2]
The Schlitterbahn Waterpark is a popular location for families that are seeking refuge from the heat in the summer. In New Braunfels, visitors can spend time doing a variety of activities that vary in thrill and difficulty. Several ways to spend time at Schlitterbahn Waterpark include floating down the lazy river, sliding down a water coaster, or splashing around in a wave pool.[2]
There are also a variety of state parks and nationally protected land in Texas. Padre Island National Seashore is a long stretch of coastline found on Padre Island. Windsurfing is a popular pastime, and there are tide pools, dunes, and prairies that are home to a variety of birds and marine life. Big Bend National Park is an outdoor adventure area that contains many areas for hiking, fishing, and horseback riding. Near the United States and Mexico border, and separated by the Rio Grande River, there are many river-based activities that are available to visitors as well.[2]

The telecommunications company known as AT&T is one of the world's largest corporations, which has a particular focus on cybersecurity, cellphone services, internet, television services, and more. Located in Dallas, Texas, there are over 200,000 employees that work for this 215 billion-dollar company. ExxonMobil is another company that has its headquarters in Texas, specifically in the city of Irving. ExxonMobil specializes in oil and gas, producing energy from various substances and chemical products. Dell Technologies is found in Round Rock and has two divisions. The Dell Client Solutions Group is responsible for making tablets, PCs, laptops, and more technological products for individual customers. Due to its size, there are a number of various climates throughout the region. In the northern part of the state, there are many plains. The environment tends to be semi-arid and has an average precipitation of 18 to 20 inches, about 457.2 to 508 millimeters. The northern areas of Texas also tend to be the coldest areas of the state. In this northern area of Texas is a section called Tornado Alley, which often has tornadoes throughout the warmer times of the year. In the western regions, there are more arid climates comprised of deserts and mountain ranges. It rains about the same as the northern region in the lower elevations, but heavy snowfall also occurs in the mountains there. Eastern locations in Texas are in a humid subtropical climate and can receive around 60 inches of rain, about 1524 millimeters, which is the highest in the state. In the south, the coasts have moderate temperatures, while the climate patterns further from the coast align more with the northern areas' patterns. Central Texas has many hills with rivers throughout the land and has semi-arid climates in the western part and subtropical climates everywhere else.[6]
The most popular time to visit Texas tends to be when the year is in between the heat of summer and the cold of winter. Specifically, March through May and September to November are thought of as the best months to visit. Texas, as a whole, tends to be hot, dry, and humid in a majority of the areas in the state, while winters are cold and can see snowfall, especially in the northern regions of the state. With spring and fall in between, the temperatures tend to be more mild and comfortable for a wide variety of activities, both indoor and outdoor. In the fall, temperatures tend to be close to 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, which is about 21.1 to 26.7 degrees Celsius. The northern parts of the state where the elevation is higher, generally has colder weather, while the southern areas are usually warmer. The highest ever temperature recorded in the state came from the city of Seymour, which saw temperatures reach 120 degrees Fahrenheit, about 48.9 degrees Celsius, in August of 1936. The record for the lowest temperature is held by the city of Seminole, which reached -23 degrees Fahrenheit, about -30.6 degrees Celsius, in February of 1933.[6]
There are a wide variety of animals that are found native to Texas. Forests and plains are the most typical biome in Texas, so there are many woodland creatures in the uncivilized parts of the state. One unique mammal that can be found in most areas of the state is the nine-banded armadillo. Some other mammals commonly found in the region include foxes, squirrels, pigs, rabbits, raccoons, sheep, and more. There are also a number of predators that live in the state, such as bears, coyotes, and wolves.[10]
The vegetation that is native to the area can vary depending on which part of Texas is the subject. Deciduous trees like the bald cypress and chinquapin oak are commonly found. The Texas paintbrush is a unique flower that blooms red or orange, although it doesn't require as much water as other plants, it is known for having an unpredictable blooming period. One year it may bloom perfectly, and the following year it may not bloom at all. A more common flower is called black-eyed Susan, which is similar in design to sunflowers and often attracts butterflies.[5]
Texas was first inhabited by Native American tribes that are rumored to have been in the area since 37,000 years ago. They were primarily hunters that lived off of the wildlife of the plains. After some time, the tribes established villages in what is now eastern Texas and built farms to harvest fruits and vegetables. They formed a loose system of leadership to provide mutual protection and peace that became known as the Caddo Confederacies. When the European travelers entered the central part of Texas for the first time, there were very few settlements that remained of the Native Americans. It wasn't until years later that their culture became a more prominent influence on those who came.[3]
There were a number of various sailors and settlers that came to Texas between the 1500s and early 1700s. Spain had sent dozens of expeditions into Texas. It was one of these expeditions that created the military post that is now known as The Alamo. There were also French explorers that came to Texas. René-Robert Cavelier and Sieur de La Salle helped settle a French colony at Matagorda Bay.[3]
In 1835, Mexico's appointed president, Antonio López de Santa Anna, rejected the Texans' desire for a less restrictive government and sent troops to bolster his forces in Texas. The people of the territory formed their own government and issued a declaration of independence in 1836. The famous siege against The Alamo took place from February 23, 1836, to March 6, 1836. The objective for The Alamo was to delay the Mexican forces and buy time for their other military organizations to get a better foothold. There were an estimated 183 to 189 defenders that were all killed during the siege. However, on April 21, the military leader known as Sam Houston led an attack that caught the Mexican troops off guard at the San Jacinto River. The battle ended with the capture of Santa Anna, and the Texans were victorious. For the next nine years, they were established as their own country until The United States accepted their request for annexation, and they joined the U.S. as the 28th state on December 29, 1845. This is also where the state gets its nickname from. Sometimes called "The Lone Star State," this nickname is a reminder that they had become their own nation before they were a state.[3]
