California, the most residential state in the U.S., is home to over 39.7 million people and is ranked number one for having the most tourism out of all fifty states in America.[6] One of the most popular attractions in the state is The Golden Gate Bridge, which has become a significant symbol of California and has been featured in several Hollywood films causing it to rise in popularity over time.[2] California receives the most visitors during the summer season when the weather is relatively warmer than the winter months because of the wide range of outdoor activities scattered around the state, such as theme parks, beaches, zoos, national parks, and camping. The average temperature at the peak in August for the central and eastern parts of California near Sacramento and Fresno tends to be around 91 degrees Fahrenheit, while the average low temperatures during the winter months are usually near 40 degrees Fahrenheit.[9] Sacramento is the seventh most populated city in the state, yet still serves as the capital of California. It was officially designated to be the capital in 1854 when, at the time, it had become the destination point for new settlers during the Gold Rush.[12]
California is the most populated state in the U.S. and continues to increase yearly, reaching approximately 39.7 million residents.[6] The immense population is due to California’s popular film industry, beach resorts, and thriving economy that makes it such a hot spot for tourism and residency. Hollywood is known to be the state’s biggest symbol of the entertainment business as it contains attractions such as The Walk of Fame where actors, musicians, directors, and other influencers are represented by a brass star on the sidewalk of Hollywood Boulevard, which extends out to 15 blocks and comprises of more than 2,690 stars.[7] One of Hollywood’s most defining features is the iconic sign that overlooks that portion of the city. People generally take hikes or visit the Griffith Observatory to get the best views/pictures of the sign. In addition to the entertainment industry’s impact on the state, a few other commonly known places in California are the family friendly theme parks such as Disneyland, Universal Studios Hollywood, Six Flags, and SeaWorld, to name a few. The legacy left by Walt Disney resulted in one of California’s most popular attractions, Disneyland, with over 18 million visitors per year. This attraction is stationed in Anaheim, and is the aspect of the city that is most well-known.[8] Furthermore, one of California’s most widely known landmarks, frequently featured in Hollywood films, is the Golden Gate Bridge. This 1.7 mile long structure was the tallest bridge until 1993. Currently more than 10 million people visit the Golden Gate Bridge each year.[2]
During the peak summer months is when visitors can expect the biggest crowds at the top attractions, especially for outdoor activities. Yosemite National Park is California’s most popular outdoor attraction with over 1,200 square miles of photogenic woodlands and numerous hiking trails.[4] For years the Yosemite Valley was protected by John Muir, influential author and naturalist, by claiming it a national park before national parks even existed. For visitors who come during the winter season, Yosemite National Park and Mount Whitney provide skiing opportunities as well as snowshoeing and ice skating from November to March when snow coats the mountains.[5] During the summer season is when most people visit the Santa Monica State Beach and the Santa Monica Pier, a double jointed pier that juts out into the Pacific Ocean, which has grown to be a popular outdoor attraction in California. The pier is famous for the diverse roller coaster rides and the Pacific Park Ferris Wheel, the only solar powered ferris wheel in the world.[3] The total number of visitors California received in 2020 reached 140.6 million, a decrease of 50.8% in comparison to 2019. According to research done by Visit California Industry, 2025 is expected to have approximately 303.1 million visitors.[14]
California’s climate changes rapidly depending on elevation, latitude, and proximity to the coast. Rainfall continues along the coast in the cooler seasons while the summers tend to be warm and dry with temperatures reaching the hundreds. Because the state itself is so large, the climate ranges from polar to subtropical, which signifies that the northern parts of California receive more rainfall than the southern. Although freezing temperatures are rare in the state, the coldest month of the year for California is January with temperatures in the frigid 3 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada. As for the rest of the state below the mountains during January the temperatures tend to be around 54 degrees Fahrenheit.[9]
California is located in the western United States, bordered by Nevada on the east side of the state, the Pacific Ocean to the west, Oregon to the north, Arizona in the southeast, and the Mexican state of Baja California on the south. It is the largest state in America by area.[13] From the west coast to the Sierra Nevada mountain range the state’s varied topography covers the Pacific Ocean.[9] The Sierra Nevada range embraces Yosemite Valley, famous for its glacially carved structures, and Sequoia National Park, home to many Sequoia trees, as the name implies.[13]
When it comes to plant life in California, the state is most well known for its redwood trees. Before European settlement in 1542, redwoods covered approximately 2 million acres of the state. Much of the redwood forests were destroyed over time but today approximately 200,000 acres remain protected in state and national parks. The varied geography of California also consists of many plants introduced from other countries, in particular the Bermuda grass from southern Asia, the giant reed from southern Europe, and the thistle from Central Asia. Despite the fact that there’s a great amount of city life in California, the state’s ecosystem takes up much of the area. The most common animals that inhabit the state include beavers, hawks, snakes, cougars, black bears, deer, squirrels, lizards, raccoons, weasels, and otters.[10]
California was not claimed U.S. territory until 1847, but was discovered in the 1700’s when Spanish missionaries had arrived on the land. Before Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, a Spanish navigator, first took sight of the land we now know as California, over 130,000 Native Americans were inhabiting the territory. Due to the region’s poverty and the decline of Spanish exploration, Spain neglected the area for more than two centuries. In 1602 Sebastian Vizcaino, a Spanish merchant, sailed to southern California and named San Diego, Santa Catalina Island, Santa Barbara, and Monterey. He and several other explorers first believed California was an island and were discouraged when they were unable to create maps of the surrounding seas.[10]
The state’s name is derived from a romance novel written in the 16th century by Spanish author, Garcia Ordonez de Montalvo. In the book it describes an island containing large amounts of gold with Amazon-like warriors who lived on the island and aided the protagonist. The island was also inhabited by griffins, a mythical animal figured to be a lion-eagle hybrid. In 1542 when Spanish explorers first discovered what they believed to be an island on the Pacific coast, they named it California after Montalvo’s mythical island.[1]
The creation of California’s state flag, also known as “The Bear Flag”, began during the 1846 Bear Flag Revolt. More than a century ago the California grizzly bear roamed the forests of California but later on, the "Gold Rush" of 1849 had initiated the killing of the species. In 1924 the bears were confirmed to be extinct after the very last one that was being held captive in the Golden Gate Park Zoo died in 1911. In the past, many different versions of the California state flag were designed to represent the last California grizzly bear but the image varied depending on the manufacturer. Eventually, the official rendering of the bear was standardized based on an 1855 watercolor by Charles Christian Nahl.[11]

While the inn is located in a residential district of Palm Springs, California, the vicinity offers a wide range of activities for people to engage in. The adjacent mountain range has several hiking trails, and downtown Palm Springs has an arrangement of shops and restaurants.
